It has to be, our transcripts are the only things that I knew of that had a due date of February 15, 2010.

I have three “academic record needed” listed myself, haha. I would have thought there would have been four, though (3 CCC transcripts and my high school transcript).

Oh well. I did already order my high school one (I should post pictures of this in its envelope. It is the most unofficial looking official transcript I have ever seen) and I just sent the requests in for my former two CCCs. I’ll put in the request for my current one after grades are posted for the current quarter. I’m intending to send everything together in one packet.

I may kick myself for sharing this later, but if anyone reading this was assigned to Porter, I contacted housing there and was informed there are a few singles available both in residence halls and apartments. However, they will not know the likelihood of being assigned one if requested until after all submissions are in for the incoming students. But it is good to know they’re not completely filled up and there’s a chance :)

Yeah, my HS transcript is not a to-do item either. I’m gonna send it anyway though, since it’s part of the conditions of admission.

Is anyone else finding that the classes you really want to take are the courses that seem to be filling up the fastest? All 3 of the classes I’d planned on enrolling in are either almost full, or filling up at a rate that implies it’ll be full by orientation day.

Two of mine are full (out of four that were recommended for me to take this winter), but I have a promise for an add code for them from the department already so I’m not worried. It would also make sense if they were holding some spots for transfers like a few of the other campuses do.

Unfortunately, I do not have such a guarantee from the other department I am interested in majoring in (doing a double major) currently. And one of the classes has very few spots remaining.

I keep mentioning this, but I highly recommend talking to the department for your classes and/or your major if you haven’t already. Most of the faculty is incredibly helpful from what I have experienced so far. Just, as I have also mentioned, I highly recommend not directly asking for an add code, but rather to explain the situation. My experience seems to also be if it was a schedule they previously recommended for you, they are more likely to give you an add code.

No guarantees that will work, of course, though.

Yes! I need to do that! I wasn’t sure I could do that yet, since I didn’t see any program advisor listed in MyUCSC. So, I’ll call the politics department, but what should I tell them? Does it have to be more than “I really wanna take this class!”

Just look up the email address for the department you are majoring in (or you can call, I’m sure. I just prefer email so I have a written confirmation). You don’t need to wait for an adviser to be assigned to you. I don’t have one yet either, but I emailed in the first couple weeks of October.

And what I did was ask what courses they recommend I take. One department did request unofficial transcripts from me, the other did not and simply accepted which courses I had already fulfilled of the prereqs. Note that if any of your courses have a prereq, you will need to have sent in your unofficial transcripts at least roughly two weeks before orientation to ensure you will be able to add those classes.

I still have some prereqs to even officially declare my majors because my campus did not offer everything I needed. So those are my main priority classes I have to take this winter.

My recommendation would be to ask for a course plan or to present the one you believe is correct. When I received the promise for add codes, I had commented about my concern in obtaining the classes I needed due to low seats available in general for those classes. However, as I mentioned, these are the prereqs I have to finish so there is probably some leniency there for me. If there are other courses you can take that fulfill the same requirements, you may be asked to compromise.

Anywho, it never hurts to inquire (politely) about what you can do should you not be able to get any of the classes you need.

Thanks Kender. You’re always so helpful! :] I’m gonna go do that right now. Do you think it would work out (as far as pre-reqs go) if I just bring my unofficial transcripts up with me to orientation, instead of mailing them in advance?

I’m just anal and paranoid and have already looked up most of this information anyways ;). I hate submitting forms without knowing exactly what I’m getting into. I figure I might as well share the information so that the friendly responses I’ve been getting do not turned annoyed when I’m the umpteenth person to ask the same question.

And our orientation checklist actually recommends the “at least two weeks prior to orientation” if your department requires them. Fourth item at this link is the checklist:

So I would find out if your department needs them and send them in as soon as possible to be safe. And bring a set with you so you have everything you took on hand as well.

I know what you mean, I’m the same way when it comes to forms. I enjoy doing the research behind all this stuff, but I also can get sidetracked relatively easily, haha.

Hmmm, I guess I’ll have to print out my relevant unofficial transcripts from the internets and fax it to the department tomorrow. Thanks again!

So, here’s the answer to the question about our winter fees payment being due before our financial aid is disbursed. From the Student Business Services FAQ:

"*20. I am expecting to receive enough financial aid to cover my current bill, but the aid has yet to post to my account. What do I do to make sure that I don’t get a late fee on this bill?

Usually late fees will not be assessed if there is anticipated financial aid on your account. If there is a late fee, please e-mail oarinfo@ucsc.edu with a description of the situation, Student Business Services will investigate and respond.*"

I know I did not do my usual reference to sources, but I did post something similar on page 7 ;). I simply did not reference about contesting any late fees that might accidentally be applied. I merely said the payment does not need to be worried about if we know we have financial aid coming (and it shows as accepted in the system).

Don’t forget to change your settings to allow UCSC to use your funds for all bills placed to your account.

Financial aid tends to work in a fairly similar manner at many state schools. And the office I work in processes our student IDs so I hear quite a bit about payment and such from financial aid (you must have all your fees paid to obtain a student ID, but if you have financial aid that will be dispersed, the system indicates this and allows the ID to be made). Plus the Financial Aid Office is right next to the office I work in.

I already thanked you! Btw, do you know how to opt-in for direct deposit of excess financial aid funds disbursed (instead of having a check mailed to you)? I saw it once on MyUCSC, like a month ago, and haven’t been able to find it since…

Haha, I wasn’t looking to be thanked, I’m just OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder) and it kicked in with a “ack, repetitive information!” alarm. Although I do like having the reference to things. I’m a stickler for references :)

Ignore me, we all know we’re going a little nutty with trying to finish the semester/quarter up (I’m on the latter so I hit finals here VERY soon). Trying to get all our school stuff done with the minimal deadlines we have is absolute murder on top of that stress, though!

Anywho, I know I saw it too. I’ll do some digging for the paperwork here as soon as I get the copies done I need to make for work. From what I remember, it involves sending a voided check to one of the offices on campus (similar to setting up direct deposit with an employer). I will find the information on that here in a minute :)

So supposedly, the information for us to sign up for direct deposit is under “Accounts and Billing” in our myUCSC and we provide routing information from our account (there’s an example where to find this on the page as well). However, I do not see this as an option yet. They’ve been constantly giving us new links even just the past few days so I’m sure it will show up eventually :). If I catch it before someone else does, I’ll make a post it’s available.

@empirescrumble–Yepp I’ll be there for orientation as well…Gonna stay up there for the weekend…I seriously can’t wait to go back up…And yes indeed, I am beyond excited to be finally getting out of Socal in general, 19 years down here is enough for me…How’s your excitement level? =)

@voyager21–Ha, no I haven’t completed all my pre-req’s yet…I’m taking Calculus 1 right now, and still need Calc 2. I haven’t done any physics yet either. (Math courses scare the bajeezus outta me) I have to take that vert/botany/pops combo class up there cuz in my community college, I took vert and botany separately and didn’t take pops (I didn’t know where I wanted to transfer to at that time)…I’m done with all my Gen Chem and O-Chem though…Are you a Biology major as well? And as for the MCAT, I might just spend the bucks and take the prep course… I don’t think I have enough self-discipline to study on my own for all of those subjects and especially for something as important as the MCATs! =) What are you gonna do for the MCATs?

Got into College 9! My first choice too, I am happyyy

Filling out housing applications as well as meeting deadlines, and with little over a month… I feel completely checked out here at my last semester at my CC…

Thanks for the tip about about the direct deposit link showing up, voyager21 :)

So, anyone else have the first set of fees already showing on their account?

I seem to be missing my health insurance fee (everything else for tuition fee and campus fee wise is there, though). I do have “other health insurance,” but it’s ridiculously expensive right now and is going up (was $109/month when I got it last year, then went up to $126/month, now will be $156/month until I turn 25 in May when it’ll be $180/month I simply can’t afford it anymore). I had been considering keeping it for when I am at home, but I can’t justify nearly $200 a month after my next birthday.

As I recall, we had to submit additional paper work to have the health fee waived. I have submitted nothing of the sort because I WANTED on campus health insurance. Even if it wasn’t significantly cheaper, the closest Kaiser is over 17 and I’m not bringing my car to campus. Let alone if I was sick enough to need to go, no way I would be in a position to drive myself, haha!

Perhaps it will show up later, but I’m going to email the Health Department at UCSC if it doesn’t get charged in the next week or so. As always, I’ll report back what I learn <3

@itsallisooon: Cool, I’ll be spending the weekend up there too. Also, I’ll be in SC Thanksgiving weekend, from the 25th through the 29th! Gotta get on with the apartment hunt. You kinda sound like me. I’m really excited! Counting the days almost, haha. 20 years in LA, and I’m totally done with SoCal. Been dying to get outta here for yeeeeeears. I was not excited about taking a math course, either. It had been probably 8 years since I had taken a math course (failed finite math during my first go around at college. In hindsight, it kinda contributed to me dropping out the first time), but I finally took care of it this past summer, and passed statistics with an A+! Yes, with the exclamation point and everything, haha. At least in my mind, it’s there. ;] I was stoked, totally rocked it. It meant a lot to me, because it’s great to know that all the hard work I put in, instituting changes in my life meant to help me succeed, have worked. I was always a serial underachiever. Anyway, I digress. Excuse the “personal statement”, haha.

@Kender: Does that mean the direct deposit link is showing in your portal? And, yeah, the fees are showing up in my student center. Has anyone else noticed the ability to add courses to your enrollment shopping cart?

A little off-topic, but I’m glad we all have the chance to get acquainted here before we make the move up to SC. :]

Last thing: for those UCSC winter transfers just joining us, join us here too:
