UCSC winter transfers

aw yay, i’m glad you got a single  mine is still pending, i wonder if you were assigned early because they don’t have to match you with a roommate hehe

Hrm, that’s actually a good point, I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe they pulled out who wants a single first and then went by their selection criteria for who gets one? Since no one else on here has mentioned being assigned to Porter, I have no idea if it’s exclusive to me having requested a single or if it’s anyone assigned to Porter. Although I wonder if anyone else who requested a single from one of the other colleges has their room assignment yet (if they got a single)? That would definitely confirm this a little more.

I hope you get your room assignment soon, estrellatuya! It’s oddly a huge relief having that part taken care of. Now if only they’d put the charges to my account for the room and board cost so I could feel even better (not that I want to have the huge charge staring me in the face, but more the charge will confirm the assignment and make me worry less because I’ll have more time to send in payment).

I also opted for a single and my app is still pending so I don’t think that makes a difference. It’s probably related to the specific college.

I wonder if it also has to do with the number of incoming transfers who were assigned to a specific college and how many opted to live on campus? Maybe there just weren’t that many for Porter who chose to live on campus?

Although the deadline is actually tonight to submit a housing application so I wonder why mine went ahead so quickly now. Hrm, maybe all who requested on campus housing already submitted their applications before the deadline so they were able to process Porter’s housing apps early?

I’m tempted to email the housing coordinator for Porter ask about this since I’m now incredibly curious, haha.

totally encourage you to ask, i’m also curious how the process works

my friend’s parents worked for ucsc and even they don’t know what the housing coordinator does lmao

I think all of your housing situations are already submitted, but if you guys need any help or have any questions then feel free to ask (ucsc soph).

Saw something earlier about the whole residence/apartments dispute. It really goes both ways. Residence halls may have more of an opportunity to network, but you should also keep in mind that most of those students are freshman who mostly hang out with each other. There will be a few soph in the residence halls, but they usually have their own friends. If you’re extremely outgoing or if you have really friendly neighbors, then you should be fine. Although I do know one winter transfer who moved into my floor last year and nobody even knew about him till move out day. But in most cases, I usually only see transfers going in to the apartments.
Apartments can be either horrible or great. If you get to live with some friendly people, you will have the time of your life. Environment isn’t as open as residence halls and drama does occur over chores/responsibilities. It really depends on the people you live with because some are not that welcoming, while some want to maintain a “family” type arrangement.

Anyone know anybody that lived in the University Inn? That’s what I picked and I’m curious if others were happy there.

I got confirmation today that I do indeed already have my room assignment (along with my room number). It also notes that move-in is January 4. However, I don’t know if this is Porter specific or not, but it seems arrangements can also be made if one needs to move in January 3. Wish I’d known that earlier… oh well. Anywho, no charges to my account yet for the room and board, though. Just the email confirmation of what I have.

estrellatuya: As soon as finals are done, I’ll ask the housing coordinator for Porter our questions :)

Has anybody else received their housing assignments? That’s interesting Kender you already received yours, even though they mentioned in the housing packet that we’ll probably receive them in the middle of December.

Mine had no mention of when housing would be assigned, actually. Not that I recall anyways. I’ll ask my mom to bring the packet down with her when I see her on Thursday so I can double check. But I can confirm that none of the emails I received indicated a specific day to expect an assignment of housing.

Since the housing assignments are done by each individual college’s housing coordinator and not the campus housing department, my guess would be the times would vary based on number of applicants and how many people were vying for the same spots that the college did not have enough to accommodate everyone who requested the specific assignment.

I have yet to ask my questions to Porter’s housing coordinator (I’m still buried chin deep in finals for the next few days) about the huge difference in time between Porter’s assignments and the other colleges’ assignments, but I will do so since I’m curious myself :)

As an off topic side note: Oh my god, there was snow in the East Bay Hills this morning and there was snow absolutely covering Mt. Diablo. I also heard there’s snow on 17 as well! Too bad it’s supposed to warm up later this week. Almost had snow heading to Santa Cruz! That would have been an awesome and very rare treat for this time of year!

well well well, I received my housing information. Looks like i’ll be living in the Residence Halls.

residence halls ftw ahha did you get a roommate & their contact info?

Awesome! I’m really glad other assignments are finally coming through :)! Did you log in to see it on your housing page or did they send you the information via email before then? Or have you gotten the latter part yet at all?

I received an email from the UCSC housing department regarding my “confirmed” housing plan. The email said that my college will contact me separately regarding my room mate, etc. The email didn’t actually say what kind of housing I was getting so I hopped on the housing website and checked my housing account and it says what housing option I have in the upper right hand corner. :)

I don’t think I even got that email! Just the notice on my housing page and then the email from my college a few days later.

Anywho, tomorrow’s orientation! Good luck to everyone going, looks like it’s going to be a long day (8:30am is so early :(). For those driving on 17 to get there, be very careful. It’s only calling for a light rain in the afternoon hours now, but it’s been going back and forth all week between rain to light rain. Add onto that the freeze warnings we’ve had in the Bay Area for longer than was originally anticipated creates not so fun driving conditions.

Also, for those not going, if I find out any new information that’s useful then I will post it for you when I get back (:

i wonder if i can crash orientation hahah then again it was $100 per person, they might have you guys roped off on a red carpet or something ;)

Haha, you should! You’re not that far away anyway, right? You should pull whatever that couple pulled when they crashed the White House state dinner and took pictures of themselves feeling up VP Biden, haha.

nope i’m not that far at all, but on second thought i don’t think i’m down to drive over the hill in this rain :o good luck guys! and for those who don’t know highway 1 is a much safer drive than highway 17!!

But 1 is considered to be one of the most dangerous highways in the world from what I’ve heard (I think it was Top Gear I heard this on?). At least 17 is four-lane, 1 is only two-lane with a cliff off to one side that ends in the Pacific Ocean. I do so love the drive on 1, though. It’s so gorgeous.

Plus the fact one has to take 17 to get to 1 (in fact, doesn’t 17 become 1?) anyways from the Bay Area (although technically Santa Cruz is part of the Bay Area… it’s so complicated how that works out, though).

But yeah, avoid 17 right now since you can (although it’d be awesome for you to come crash orientation!). It was horribly rainy and bad patches of fog. My mom and I got down here so incredibly late because we were waiting for some of the accidents to clear. Last ones to check in for the night at UCSC’s University Inn.

Those going: Don’t forget your needed materials. Transcripts, proposed schedules, etc :)

they widened highway 1 by santa cruz  and i suppose my statement really only applies to people who are east or south of santa cruz. if you’re north it would be kind of silly to drive all the way down 101 haha but i know people who do it!
