Ugh, I’m flying in to SJ from LA, then i’m headed to Nevada to the weekend after orientation. good luck

estrellatuya: Yeah, 101 is out of the way to get to Santa Cruz from north of it ;). And I’ll give you that, 1 by Santa Cruz is nicely widened, but I’m thinking of the entirety of 1. Only driven up from SLO on it, but it was a little nerve racking. But so worth it.

macrandle: I empathize. I have an 8:05am flight out of Oakland to Chicago on Saturday. Good luck!

i’m not a winter admit but my bf goes to ucsc and last year, i’d drive to santa cruz from san jose at least twice a week to drop him off on sunday nights and pick him up friday afternoon because he’s a diva and refuses to take the metro bus. needless to say, a lot of time spent on 17

-i’ve gotten stopped by an officer (he made me proceed to the next exit since there was no shoulder in that part of the highway and other cars were just whizzing by)
-i got a flat tire just a couple of weeks ago in scotts valley which’s ~15 minutes away from sc luckily my bf was there to change it

to clarify, 17 is considered one of the most – if not the most – dangerous highway. winding roads, sharp turns, deer crossing, rock slides, fog when the weather’s cold, etc. so be careful!

Housing: RH Single at College Ten

whoOoo!!!

I logged on the student housing site and it no longer shows the “pending” status, but I currently have no room assignment or meal plan for winter 2010. Also, under the heading “Housing Application/Contracts” it only shows an option to choose Spring 2010. Does anyone know what this means? Is it just not updated yet?

ernily: Cops like to watch that highway like a hawk. If you take those turns that say 45 even at 47, they will tend to pull you over if they catch you. Same with 1 (the part along the coast, not the part that goes into Santa Cruz), you just don’t speed on either highway.

Try driving 1 down the coast. It’s a very narrow, very curvy, two-lane highway with a steep cliff drop off right into the Pacific ;). It was a great adrenaline rush when I drove it last year (no sarcasm intended, I mean this sincerely). Honestly, I find 1 much more dangerous than 17 and 1 can get the same thick, unforgiving fog that 17 can. But 17 is at least a four-lane so it doesn’t affect me as much. I can generally at least go to another lane that isn’t into oncoming traffic if there’s an issue with the one I’m in. 1 requires me to either choose on coming traffic or the ocean to get out of someone’s way unless I’m lucky enough to be near one of the few pull-out areas.

estrellatuya: Woot! Congratulations! If it wasn’t so late, I’d call this girl I made friends with to check her housing assignment (she was assigned to 9 and had been told the same thing as you about a housing assignment not coming in until mid-December). She had such a terribly long commute yesterday ):

I’m so happy you got your assignment, though! And that you got what you wanted :). I noticed a lot of transfers I spoke with today had requested singles and most of us seemed to have gotten them of those of us who have already been assigned. I heard of someone who was even assigned to a small double, but was assured it was being treated as a single!

Anywho, I didn’t hear anything really interesting. Although if I remember correctly, there are 350 enrolled students, but I don’t know how many were at orientation. All today really did was give me a couple of the permission codes I needed (I still need to get the other two from my department adviser who was not there) and get my ID done and over with. Worth it, but with the rain it made it a not so fun experience.

Also, some of the classes really are permission code only so you will need to (if you haven’t already) speak with your department head about this. Oh, and if anyone is interested in doing 20 units (1 unit over the maximum), you need to speak with your college adviser. They are really hesitant to allow this, but seem at least open to the idea if you can prove you can handle the course load. It also depends what your course load is. However, you will have to wait until the quarter starts to add the class that puts you over the max. Sadly it seems to be quite a difficult process to get them to allow this for your first quarter. Boo. I still say it’s ridiculous to have most of the classes be worth 5 units, demand a minimum 15 units, but then cap the max at 19 units.

Anywho, yeah, I cannot emphasize enough that if you have not already dealt with all the questions you have nor contacted your department about permission codes: DO SO SOON! UCSC is open next week, but will be closed after that until the start of the winter quarter.

If I think of anything else, I’ll make sure to share it (:

On Tangent: Does it show “Confirmed Application”? Or can you at least still access the application you submitted? If you can, click on it and see whether it says it’s confirmed or not directly on your application if it is not showing on your housing page.

I can second what Kender said about orientation. You didn’t miss too much, though I did suffer from a case of information overload there for a little while. For those who have enrolled already, what courses are you taking? I got into 2 of my first choice courses (just barely made it! The one course I really wanted to take had been full for a couple weeks. I went to orientation, enrolled in a different class, then searched classes again this evening, and there was ONE spot open! I swapped out a class for that one, and now I’m way stoked on my schedule).

Anyway, I’m enrolled in Poli 120A and 43, and Phil 9. What about the rest o’ yous?

Kender: There’s no link to my winter housing application or any indication that I filled one out. I haven’t heard anything about housing in e-mail or mail ever since I submitted my application. Is it possible I didn’t get winter housing? I checked almost everyday this week and it had the “pending” status. I’ll try to contact the office ASAP.

Quick question:

I didn’t go to orientation and they say that my enrollment appointment time will be listed in the myucsc portal. Where is it?

@Vodka: Click “my student center”. It should be in the third blue box on the right-hand side, under your to do list. If you click details, it should tell you what time on the 14th you can enroll.

Yep, found it. Thanks, empirescrumble.

I saw someone mentioned the 19 unit cap limit. The main reason for that is because of some of the associated labs that the sciences carry. Otherwise not many people take the 2 credit classes that are offered. They do know people take more than the 3 class limit, so if you have higher than a 3.0 (in the case for students already at SC) then you can add a 4th class without a petition. I took 22 credits this quarter and didn’t have to petition, but it will be different for transfers.
Also, MAJOR TIP: make sure that if you ever want to switch discussions/labs or classes in general, that you SWAP and not add/drop. It might sound like a no-brainer, but so many students do it every year and they find out their original spot is taken. If you don’t like your discussion time, normally you can change it the first week of class WITHOUT changes to your student portal. If all the labs/discussions are full but you’re registered for the class, they will open more when class starts.

I got a Small Triple Room in the Crown/Merrill Apartments, and I’m taking AMS 11a, CMPE 80n, and ECON 111B. Orientation would’ve been better if it hadn’t rained! lol Most people probably left after enrolling for classes because there were only like 20 of us left at the closing ceremony hahha :]

Good to know! Who do we ask in order to change discussion section times, the professor? The TA? Or do we have to try and switch with another student in the course?

I’ve got a discussion section 8am every Friday, which is definitely a recipe for disaster for me, haha.

on tangent ~ if you haven’t called already that sounds completely normal. i haven’t received anything that says confirmed and all i have in the contract box is the ability to apply for spring. no links or anything to my old app. but for some reason in the top right corner is shows me my assignment information hah

also, is anyone else finding this last week of school extremely difficult?? i have two research papers due and finals but all i can do is think about ucsc lol!

Thanks estrellatuya, that’s good to know. I checked again today and it says pending again. I’m relieved. Good luck on finals, everyone.

For those @ orientation. I wasn’t able to stay to add classes at the stevenson center because I had to catch a plane flight. I did however receive my permission code to add an already full class. But when I clicked "finish enrollment, I got an X saying that the class was full even though I entered a permission number. I wasn’t able to ask questions because i’m here in Nevada, but I emailed my adviser but I doubt she’ll be able to respond until next week. Any help? Wrong number? how can I circumvent this?

empire - it really depends on the type of course. Many sections are a type of “drop in” section that can be mandatory or not. One example is my econ 100b class last year. I signed up for a 8am section, but I always attended the 4pm one because I liked the TA more and I knew I couldn’t wake up that early. Some classes may only have 1-2 sections, so you might be stuck for those. If the section is structured where they have a roster or your section has weekly quizzes, then you just talk with the TA about switching sections.

Also voyager, do you have Gomez for CMPE80n? I took that course Fall '09 and it was probably my easiest class at SC.

Did anyone get more than 1 permission code for their upper divs? And can you only get permission codes from your undergrad department advisor?
