UCSD Appeal

I applied to UCSD and got rejected. I sent an appeal because I didn't list on my application that my father is verbally abusive and that seems pretty compelling to me. There are quite a few people at my school who have applications not as strong as mine that got in. Is there a chance my appeal will work?

What are your stats? While i sympathize with your situation, that isnt the only thing that will get you in. If you had a lot of hardships in your family, you really should have put it forth in your personal stmt.

If it’s just that he was verbally abusive, I do not think that will make a significant difference in your application and appeal. Sorry.

I have a 3.9 (weighted, low I know), 720 crit reading, 710 writing and 700 math on SAT, bio, us hist, world hist and math 2 subject tests all in the high 600s or 700s. 4 on ap bio, world history, english comp and a 3 on us hist. I’ve done spirit and competitive cheer all 4 years, 1 year of swimming and 2 of track. I’m a girl scout working on my gold award and I’m a camp counselor and trainer for camp. leadership freshman soph and sr years, peer tutoring jr year (I was a tutor). I know my grades aren’t amazing, but it’s because of my dad. he’s also an alcoholic and is abusive when he’s sober, I ended up in the hospital over the summer because of the stress of him. my mom is trying to kick him out but he won’t leave. and I know verbal abuse doesn’t sound like much, but it has the same mental effects of physical abuse according to psychologists. I couldn’t put that on my app because he was reading over it, I was able to on the appeal only because I hid it from him. I know I was borderline at UCB because they asked for the supplement and my career counselor said that’s when they send it out.

of course you have a chance, you have lots of information available to back up your claim (hospital etc), however keep in mind that only a very very very small amount of appeals end up working & make sure to include any activities you have since been involved in during senior year! good luck
