so i got accepted to ucsd as a visual arts major
but im curious.. is art in ucsd good?
like i know ucla has strong art but what about ucsd?

I’m a second year vis art major, so I can’t speak for the whole program since I’m still right in the middle of it. Also, I don’t have anything else to compare it to. But here are my thoughts so far… UCSD classes are concept intensive rather than hands on. For example, in my film classes, they don’t teach you techniques like lighting or angles or even how to use a video camera. They care more about what your video represents. A sloppy, fuzzy video about death and suicide will get a better grade than a beautifully filmed and edited video about a birthday party, for example. This may be true with the art world in general.

The production lab has equipment (such as cameras) that you can check out. They do give you short tutorials on how to use the equipment. My professor from last quarter asked our class what we’d like changed about the art program at UCSD, and the majority asked for more hands-on classes. We didn’t feel that UCSD prepared their art students for a career in the commercial world, such as film-making, print media, graphic design. Not everyone wants to work in a gallery or be an art critic. He really seemed to care about our comments and told us that many of the old professors are retiring and they are working on re-tooling the art program.

So my overall impression is that I’ve really learned a lot and definitely look at art differently now. However, I wouldn’t know how to put together a really cool portfolio that will land me a job. Maybe that will come later when I take more upper-div classes. I’m planning to study abroad for a semester at a university that specializes in art to get that hands-on technique that I feel I’m missing from UCSD.

Hello,
I’m currently a senior in high school, and am looking forward to pursue a career in art.
I applied to UCSD sixth college, as a studio art major.
However, I was wondering what your SAT I/ ACT test scores were.
The only problem I’m facing, is with my test scores.
I have a high GPA, and good SAT II test scores.
But, my SAT I, and ACT scores are considerably low.
I have an average of 1500 on my SAT I, but a 3.84 unweighted GPA (without AP).
I got a 740 for SAT I korean, and a 770 for SAT II literature.
what are my chances for getting accepted into UCSD, as a studio art major.
I’m so worried.
I hope to hear back from you soon! Thank you.

Since replying several months ago, I’ve found that UCSD is 2nd for their art program (right behind UCLA) out of all the UC’s. I now realize that learning concepts is more important than technique. Here’s the UC rankings for Fine Arts: [University of California - UC Newsroom | Top rankings for UC graduate programs](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/article/27308)

San Diego 13
Davis 27

When you apply to UCSD, they don’t take your major into consideration. All majors are evaluated using the same criteria. So applying to studio arts does not help or hurt you in acceptance. For what it’s worth, my scores…

UC GPA: about 3.9 (can’t remember exactly)
SAT I: 2060
SAT II Bio: 680
SAT II Math: 700

Good luck.
