UCSD Athletics Tries a Hail Mary Pro: Activity Fee the Only Viable Funding Option

i support it because in the long run it will help ucsd improve it image and get all the alumni and students attending more pride in the school... but then i do realize that it more money that we have to pay... -.-
if only there was an easy button... like the one in the staples commerical... lol

IMO it is the easiest way for SD to begin to improve its image as a nerd school. Strong sports programs attract students and raise the school's profile. SD students pay less in fees than the UC schools with strong sports programs like UCLA, UCD, and CAL. If the referendum doesn't pass SD will experience the loss of more than half of their sports teams. This loss would then lead to SD losing its D2 NCAA ranking.

San Diego is a joke when it comes to sports right now; if the referendum doesn't pass then sports will pretty much be non-existent at this school. This D2 thing is gay enough as it is--please don't let it get any worse!

The most important thing to keep in mind is that this referendum is simply to MAINTAIN (freakin PATHETIC!) the sports programs that we currently have, not to increase the amount of teams, or anything of that matter.

(sigh) Sports help school spirit sooo much; if only we had more...

i like my nerd school the way it is--in fact, one of the (less significant) reasons i came here was to get away from sports (mostly football). i can think of 1,001 ways to spend the extra $70 or so. if the department is running a $300k debt, fine, $300k/20k students = $15 one time--i'll be willing to make up the difference, but not $70 a quarter. sorry, i'm voting against it. nothing personal, i like being at a nerd school and even if there were big basketball games on friday nights, i still wouldn't go. i cared a lot about school spirit in high school but there's nothing unifying like homecoming or class rallies in college, so why bother?

I like my nerd school the way it is too, but better sports would help bring in more money, students, etc in the long run. I mean, look how far UCSD has gotten with the "nerd image" in its short lifespan. It certainly doesn't need good sports, but it can't hurt.

I'm voting for it as well. This school could use a shot in the arm and I truly believe that sports could bring the six colleges together. Even if you don't like sports or athletes, there's no denying that sports play a major role in campus morale. I don't think we should emphasize sports like the Florida schools, but a small upgrade would be welcome.

I'd rather have the cash.

Shortsighted of you Slorg but at least you are honest dude.

Shortsighted? How?

shortsighted because:
1. sports bring spirit to your campus
2. sports bring attention to your campus (attention=enrollment)
3. sports are the best way to get and keep strong alumni support
4. sports provide something fun for the entire school population to watch and support
5. hot girls want to go where the athletes are so sports make your campus better looking
6. sports improve the athletic facilities for everyone on the campus
7. sports improve the quantity and quality of athletic intramurals and clubs available on your campus
8. strong sports programs on campus provide internships and jobs for students
9. playing and watching sports is fun
10. sports promote healthy living

To sum it up you get a lot in return for your campus in exchange for a very small price. It is well worth the investment.

slorg is right
im a big sports fan both college/pros but the magic isnt there in ucsd. School spirit already sucks dont waste ur money

i am voting no too...250 yeah right

if u want sports...trash all the sports right now and invest everything you have in football. sorry, people dont watch college sports for fencing, diving, crew, cross country, etc Its the truth.
However, once u have a decent football program, the money starts coming in for other sports mentioned above. bingo the problem is solved

Voting no instead of not voting will actually probably help the yes vote by reaching the 20% minimum participation.

Voiceofreason: Many of those benefits are irrelevant or won't affect me over the next three years.

im not going to vote

duuude...people at ucsd suck

That's why I'm at UCD dude....I tried to help.

One more point to the no voters. Even if you think you are not directly benefiting from your vote, in reality you will. Some day you will be a UCSD alumni, have some pride.

I agree about adding football though dude, best sport ever.

You're just hanging out with the wrong people. My friends are awesome.

haha...i never said i hated my friends; otherwise they wouldn't REALLY be my friends, would they? The problem isn't the people I hang out with...the problem is the school! hahaha

I just meant what I said as a general statement about the population at UCSD.

Doooooooooood you shoulda come to UCD.................too late doooodude......

1) Well in that case, thanks for totally generalizing everyone at UCSD. :).

2) (to Voiceofreason) Is there a reason that you expend every effort to proclaim UC Davis's superiority over UCSD? It's like, really obvious.
