My major is gonna be mech engineering and I wanted to do a minor in Industrial design(or any type of design ). UCSD does not offer any type of design as a major/minor.I'm at sixth college and I spoke to an academic advisor ,he said it's not possible to minor in design.Well I thought If SIXTH COLLEGE is really about " ART & TECHNOLOGY " it should've been possible. He just said that since sixth was new they had none of their groundwork in place n so it wont be possible to make special minors n stuff .The worst part is this would've been possible in any colege OTHER than SIXTH......any current students at UCSD with any info ??
P.S. How many courses are to be taken to complete a minor ??

Please HELP !! somebody.......anybody...............

Call the MAE department...they can point you in the right direction. Art and technology doesn't imply a design or minor - your college has NO bearing on what you can study aside from your GE's.

Hey, yeah I in as a structual engineer right now. I think i want to change it to Industrial Engineering. UCSD does have IE, so we are going to have to create our own major. It shouldn't be that hard since it is mostly engineering. Well yeah, thats what I think we have to do. Create out own major.

Well, karthik i realised that too.........so that makes it worse, since the chances of me doing a minor in design will be remote.....the adviser at sixth said to get a minor you need to take 7 courses of that field , is this true?? Only 7 courses?.....

Liux creating a minor is pretty difficult I was told by the staff at UCSD so I guess a major would be even more so..........Also structural and industrial engineering are very different.......if u want to do industrial engr ur best bet wud be mechanical engr...........

is a minor that valuable to a resume??,,,,neways i dint want to do design for the sole purpose of beefing up my resume.....i really wanted proffesional guidance on the subject of industrial design...is there any way for me to get a minor if I cant get one at UCSD??

switch colleges u can switch by winter
i am switching to warren

switching colleges won't do anything for cooladu's situation. again, major and minor do not correspond with college.

"The worst part is this would've been possible in any colege OTHER than SIXTH"

Actually clairesolo......i 've realised that switching colleges wil not make any difference to my minor.......neways r u sure u can change ur colege before winter??how do u do it?which college r u in now?

i think policy is you ahve to live in your college for a year, and then you have to apply to change and have a really good reason. it doesnt help if the college you're in now was higher choice on your app than what you want to switch to either =)

i have been lied to.....

yeah ur rite bver.......also the only reason they'll change ur college is if u show them that ur gonna graduate 2 quarters earlier AND take fewer classes.

well in terms of college switches:

I was told that you DO need to live a year in your college and apply for an ITC (intercollege transfer) spring quarter of your freshman year.

However, what I have learned from personal experience (I was switched to Sixth from Revelle on appeal) is persistence is key. Make consistent contact with them and make sure they are WELL aware of your wish to change.

lecrobeau 1) why did u choose sixth over revelle? 2)How wud u compare the G.E.'s of the 2 colleges? 3)Which college has the most interesting courses?(interesting on my terms : fine art, engineering, culinary courses if any, film making)

4)are the sixth colege residence halls as icky as they look?

thanx !
