I got in UCI today. Some people got in with a below 3.1 gpa. Seems like UCI is slacking this year. Even UCSB has a much higher cut off around 3.3 this year. I hope you guys get in but at the same time I hope UCSD keep the cut off relatively close to the past years’ standard. Everybody wants to get in a good school but a good school doesn’t take everybody in. I hope I can get in UCSD this Friday but at the same time I do hope that they keep a competitive student pool. Also whoever chooses to skip UCSD because “it’s socially dead” does not deserve to go lol, It’s practically a mini silicon valley around the SD campus with all these high tech computer and bio chem firms. You’ll ALWAYS find friends and social activities if you want to but don’t expect party everywhere as it’s a very academic focused school. It’s a good thing if you wanna use your last two years of college to better yourself and be competitive when you get out. If you wanna party all day errrday go to UCSB or UCI. Just don’t expect the same level of job and entrepreneurship opportunities as in UCSD after graduation. Just my 2 cents no offense to anyone.
So UCSD is going to release their admission decisions Friday right? Some people were saying tomorrow.
@frkfr93 you don’t know the whole story. May be their major gpa is 4.0… which is better than urs. You
Got in , why are complaining then? You don’t wanna go to uci don’t go then…don’t wish ill for others… everyone in here is working hard. If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything .
Thank you!
Let’s not be snobs. We’re all looking to finish our undergrad years.
Yall need to chill tf out lol, you have bigger things to worry about (Friday)… anyways, just 40 more hours 8-> 8-> 8->
@bigvoot so true! any school is what you’ll make of it
Oh, dang. I thought I posted this, when I started the thread, but I guess not…
Anyhow, new thread rule #47: PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE T_OLLS (I think this is a banned word on this forum, but we need to call them what they are). I already see a few of them here, starting fires and feeding on your souls. Such negativity - much wow. For your own safety, please do not engage, let them steam in their own negative thoughts and wishes. The Universe will respond accordingly (hopefully, by striking them right in their big hairy bottoms )
Quite a generation gap on this board!
I certainly meant no offense, and as the father of a soon to be law school graduate, and another college grad, i know first hand (from a parents perspective) the ideologies 18-25 yo’s have. Not a good or bad thing, just indicative of that time of life.
I am not passive/aggressive either, so it is not for me to poo poo any of your feelings, attitudes or expectations regarding the next day, week, or two years of your lives. I can say that God willing, i hope each and every one of you make it to 50+ and can look back at the 2017 you, and laugh. You will certainly change.
With that said, my feeling is for everyone to “do you.” The conversation is getting a little snarky, and that is not cool. Please be respectful of each others opinions. If I have posted anything that has been offensive I apologize.
One last word; social construct, or in the parlance of political science; constructivism. Our application to these schools are part of a greater narrative that we are forced to accept. UCLA had over 100k applicants with a 2016 acceptance rate of 26%. Restrict access to something, give it the air of exclusivity, and look at the lengths people will go to be part of it. This thread is a microcosm of the world in which everything is viewed through the lens of winners and losers.
Those accepted with higher gpa’s will feel less special if they find out someone else got in with a lower one. Cal acceptance is the pinnacle, while attending Merced is looked down upon. As opposed to being fellow UC scholars, we are falling into the trap of classism. It is only in a class based society that one’s value is determined by race, gender, ethnicity, education, or wealth.
I could go on but I fear I am liable to be ostracized after this post!!
@frkfr93 We’ve already explained that when we say “socially dead” it doesn’t mean we want to party 24/7…
This conversation went from 0 to 100 real quick. Yes, I agree @thinkweism college is what we make of it and hopefully we all do well in the school we get into.
Good luck to you guys on the 21st! Hopefully UCSD doesn’t blindsight you guys like UCLA did haha
aw cmon you guys, we’re all waiting for admissions together and suffering from anxiety waiting! We gotta be supporting and motivating each other not tearing each other down. Lets keep moral high!
Lol I think we’re all stressing and the anxiety is getting at an all-time high. I remember it being three weeks out… hopefully it doesn’t get worse the closer we get… [-O<
@zsshar actually cut off GPA is very important to the school’s academic reputation. I didn’t wish ill to anyone… I was just saying that I hope UCSD will keep their academic reputation instead of trying too hard to expand and let everyone in so they can get more tuition revenue… Do you really want loads of people with a 3.0 gpa get in the same school when you worked you butt off to earn all those As for a 3.9 so you can get in??? Getting admitted to these high tier UCs is a badge honor. When they lower their student pool competition the job offers after graduation will take a hit as well. And fyi if you have a 4.0 major gpa there is no way for you to have a 3.0 unless you have all Cs in all other courses. In that case you don’t possess the ability to survive in these UCs. Did I even say that I hope people don’t get in? When the selectivity of a school goes down the ranking goes down as well. And then job offers, internship opportunities, graduate school offers all go down. I hope you can understand that. Or keep living in your SJW fallacies.
@ald6191 very well said sir. Unfortunately this society pushes us into different classes and if you wanna survive you have to adapt. I don’t really see the everybody gets a share scenario coming to life anytime soon as that is practically part communism or Marxism. Competition is the key and when there is no more competition that’ll be the end of capitalism. The reality is that generally speaking, a Berkeley will open way more doors than a Merced degree when the graduation day is nigh. Same applies here in my earlier post. If UCSD opens the door to everyone then its degree will not weigh the same as it does today.
@LynAmmo I wasn’t replying to your post sorry if my comment felt offensive in anyway. I remember that in earlier posts people were talking about how they want to ditch UCSD solely based on the lack of party scene and greek life in general. I personally feel the academic advantage outweighs the lack of social activities by a big margin. Either way just my personal opinion. And honestly if you visit the UCSD campus you will be surprised by how much fun you can have just on campus. Finding friends will not be a problem. There are parties on campus especially the famous annual Sun God Festival. Also lots of parties in Pacific beach or SDSU both are short rides away if you crave some fun. The city and the town of La Jolla provides endless opportunities let alone the best beaches in the nation. I live around UCSD so I know the place well and trust me when I say that UCSD is anything but socially dead. Here you have a choice if you want to party or just want to relax with a few friends on the beach. In schools like UCSB parties come to you instead even when you don’t want them haha.

@frkfr93 I think we all understand what you’re trying to say and I personally definitely get your point, and I also get you aren’t trying to offend anyone! We’re just advocating for the success of all, not the failure of some for the success of others or to belittle those who have academically lower GPA’s. People arent defined by grades, and just cause theyre lower than yours doesnt mean they dont deserve to go to their dream schools Being humble never hurt anyone!! Plus when someone reads your comments, it makes them feel crappy or undeserving so lets try to avoid that on a website that encourages support and student based guidance!!
@frkfr93 I have a 4.0 and never look down at a student with a 3.0. Some people have an easier time taking tests or “getting” what the teacher wants to see on the tests. Other people have major responsibilities they are juggling while they study. I have worked hard and been very lucky to get all A’s so far. I guess I feel grades are only one measure of the worth of the student. I also think Irvine is awesome…very up-and-coming in my field, anyway.
Good luck to you and everyone on this list!
@suenos53 I agree. I have a high GPA and I don’t look down on others. There are so many factors that come into play when deciding on students, relying solely on GPA to prove a students worth is naive.
@frkfr93 There is more to life than a GPA. I would take a thick skinned, experienced, battle tested 3.3 over a snot nosed 3.9 that lived to satisfy their GPA requirement. When it comes to job opportunities, unless you go to Stanford it’s an even playing field. Take it from someone who has been a hiring manager for years. You may have a few more “opportunities” but at the end of the day it comes down to how proactive you are.
Person: I disagree
Entire forum: OKAY EVERYONE LETS CALM DOWN IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY DONT SAY ANYTHING LETS JUST TAKE IT EASY
@itskelvinn sensitive much? You know diagreements are part of learning and academics right? Nobody is threatening each other here, just a conversation. Nobody is going to hurt you…your ok lol
