UCSD Fall 2017 Transfer Thread

@bmora101 I wish it’d be that easy to chill. Math professor has a hard quiz this evening so I’m studying for that. There goes my whole day.

@Orangered123 Actually UCSD is not in a deficit anymore. They are voted the best Golden Age school in the nation this year because they are starting to get lots of endowments and donations coming from alumni and donors alike. They recently invested around 1.8 billion dollars to expand the campus and to build a trolley (kinda a metro) station on campus connecting to downtown San Diego. They are in their golden age of development right now and I think their ranking will rise pretty fast in a few years. However, they are going to up the student population to 40,000 students so maybe they will take more students in this year. Not sure but I don’t think they are in dire need of the tuition money anymore.

@frkfr93 Don’t be fooled by the not for profit label. Teachers are not donating their time at the UC’s. Buildings aren’t upheld by janitors donating their time. Is Ferrari not a business? Did you know Ferrari and Lamborghini are extremely selective with some of their models? Why is that? Am I to say that they are not a business since they do not budge on their selectivity? No. Stanford tuition is around $45,000+, if they decrease their selectivity, its bad for their brand which is bad for business. However, these “mid range” schools like UCSD have a different profit margin, or should I say…“revenue” when grants, tuition, etc is calculated. Taking in lower income students with possibly lower GPA’s can also guarantee the tuition to be paid. I think it’s called the blue and gold program. This is not taking into consideration the fact that there are other higher end UC’s which students are selecting over UCSD and UCI. Someone with a 3.9 GPA is more likely to choose Berkeley/UCLA/USC or even cal poly over those schools. There are so many factors that come into play, not just selectiveness = better.

@Orangered123 Spot on, but I’m a business major so what the hell do I know right? lol

Seems like I offended people by saying its a desert. It was clearly an exaggeration based on how dry and hot it is

You could be right but I think historically speaking UCSD has been more selective than UCI and the rest of the mid tier schools. Some even consider the academic reputation of UCSD to be close to UCLA especially in science departments. I think UCSD is desperately trying to get into the top tier UC pack right now with their expansions, constructions, and aggressive hiring approaches. They are even trying to get in Division 1 to have a better athletics reputation. I personally do hope that in a few years to ten years UCSD can compete with UCLA academically speaking.

Kelvinn you didn’t offend anyone. It’s just funny that you think La Jolla or greater San Diego is a desert when people in Arizona, Nevada, and Texas be sweating like no others =))

And actually I pray to God that UCSD doesn’t raise their bar too much this year or I can’t get in myself haha. I have Econ as main and International Studies Econ as alt. I don’t know if the international econ is worth a while tho. Hopefully I can get in Econ otherwise I’ll have to make some tough decisions.

SD? Hot and dry? ;))

I’ll take that form of “weather” as opposed to what I’ve got up here in Victorville, haha.

SD is like a tropical rainforest compared to Victorville. lol

I remember driving all the way to Victorville, getting lost, missing the event, and driving all the way back. I was literally like the Mr. Krabs meme, there was so much desert bro

The worst part is that Victorville was not made to handle this amount of population. It’s like a mini LA from 3-6pm. Sitting in traffic, 110 degrees, looking at a bunch of dirt and Joshua trees, there is no good tacos up here either which is blasphemy for California…3 more months!

The transfer matrix being posted looks to be outdated. It is conflicting with the current criteria being used to screen applicants.

  1. Does the campus use the personal insight responses when evaluating a student’s application?

UCB: Yes
UCLA: Yes
UCSD: Yes
UCI: Yes
UCM: Yes

UCD: No
UCR: No
UCSB: No
UCSC: No

There is additional information to be found that many of you will find helpful. Check the source that I have included (pages 36-45).

@bugajskj how are you making the correlation between low income and low gpa?

@blackonyx My mistake that comment was for someone else!

@ald6191 I said there is a possibility. I really don’t want to get into the correlation between material/resource deprivation and education. If you want to read more on the theory here are some links:

@itskelvinn it’s not that hot here… again i don’t know where you’re actually from but it’s actually been pretty cold and rainy the past year. when it’s hot, it’s like 70s. which again, is great weather and not at all like a desert. it’s not a rain forest, but at least your mouth isn’t dry like how it is in an actual desert.

i think your joke just wasn’t effective cuz of how wrong it is
you can make a joke that is funny but this exaggeration was just so incorrect it came across as not funny

that doesn’t mean anybody is offended though, because that statement had nothing to do with anyone personally? until of course, you say “people got offended” which is when YOU start talking about /others/.

i mean we’re literally on a beach. we have the bay. the 8 used to be a river for god’s sake, why would you ever dare to call a beach city a freaking desert? it makes no sense

@otoribashi Dude… San Diego was considered to be in a drought for the past few years (just recently got out). A desert is considered a place that gets 10 inches of rain per year. Many places of San Diego got about 11 last year.

If you want to just compare to other places and say it isnt as dry… it was 85 degrees on Christmas morning a few months ago. You can compare that to most of the rest of the country that is experiencing real winter. So yes, San Diego generally receives hot weather year round

Got into UCI today! Hopefully UCSD tomorrow!

I found it interesting that you included it in your reasons.
