UCSD Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Do you guy think using an AP English score of 3 to fulfill an English class for GE will cause similar problems with admissions?

@lizzyyykkk from what I’ve heard up here UCSD is the most flexible with missing requirements (only anecdotal). So maybe they’ll give you a break. You could email them through the portal and just say you’re planning to take in summer as you were told your AP fulfilled Econ req at all the UCs. No harm, no foul. Even if you don’t go, it’s nice for the ego to get that validation.

@chloesalem Berkeley and UCLA wants 4s, I know that. Some others will accept 3s. I can’t recall how each UC plays out. A 3 works for IGETC and will override the 4 requirement at a UC.

@Ohm888 for UCLA I am missing one major prep for my major, applied math. It is a general chemistry class, so it wouldn’t really effect any classes I take there for upper divisions. And I also have 4.0 gpa and IGETC completed. What do you think?

@bruins8clap I can’t tell you, but it is not in the list of courses needed to be considered.

@Ohm888 I think I am in 75 percent range for the major. Is applied math impacted at UCLA for transfers? How do I know if it is impacted or not? Moreover, what do you mean by courses needed? Which ones are needed to be considered for the applied math major?

I’m so confused by the responses I’m reading in these forums, makes me think I won’t get in. I thought UCSB was more lax than UCSD. I don’t know what to think now.

@Scoobybrew Are you missing any requirements/major prep?

@Ohm888 Do you think UCSD considers applicant winter grades at all? I updated mine recently on my application just in hopes that they might take those grades into consideration…though I can’t imagine they haven’t already recorded my prior GPA.

This winter quarter brought my GPA up from a 3.27 to a 3.4.

@kristinpete it’s up to each UC. All they’ll say is it’s at their discretion if they take them under consideration. So it’s always good to send in March. However, It’s hard to imagine, that grades sent in Aoril will have much effect. But who knows?

@bruins8clap are you taking it now? If you are then you have nothing to worry about. As long as your Major Prep courses are done by the end of Spring.

@Trashception no bro :confused: I am not. That is only class I am missing however. and also, that class has no impact on future math classes I have to take for upper division, so I assume it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but I don’t know if UCLA applied math major is impacted or not.

@bruins8clap If it is a Major Prep requirement needed for the Major (shown as a requirement on Assist.org) and you don’t have it, I would be really worried.

Not completing major prep courses is the number one reason for rejection at UCs, not poor grades. Almost all of us have 3.5+ GPAs, so it’s more about if you have completed everything at this point.

Maybe you can try and take it online now? Late registration? I know if it is a short term class it may have just started after Spring Break so you may have a chance at taking it late?

Idk if I were you, I’d move hell and high water and beg deans and all that to finesse your way into completing everything. That, or wait another year.

@Trashception No way I can take it now. It is a general chemistry class and it also has a lab section. But, @Ohm888 says it is not needed to get accepted. So we will see. I think my 4.0 gpa helps a lot. If they had to pick between a student with a 3.6 gpa with everything done or me with a 4.0 gpa and 1 chemistry class missing, I would hope they would pick me

@bruins8clap You have to specifically ask each UC what courses they need completed for transfer.
I’m a biology major who couldn’t get Ochem done at my CC. UCI and Davis both require Ochem on assist and for my major, I called both asking if it needed to be taken prior to transferring, UCI said they wouldn’t even consider me without ochem done, no matter my grades, Davis said it didn’t matter and they take transfers who have not completed Ochem at CC and can take it once transferred.
Didn’t even apply to Irvine cause I knew I wouldn’t get in without the class, but got accepted through TAG for Davis and will be taking Ochem once I transfer there.
You have to ask them what they personally require, sometimes they don’t always require everything on assist but sometimes they do, if they require a class you don’t have done, your grades won’t matter.

@tinedancer

I see what you’re saying, but I have Calculus series, Physics 1 and 2 (calculus based), C++ 1 and C++2, linear algebra, Diff EQ, IGETC completed with 4.0 gpa. ONly class I am missing is chemistry 101, which mind you – no upper division math classes at UCLA have chemistry 101 (otherwise known as chemistry 20A) as a pre-req for their class.

Do UCS care if you take a required course during spring or is it penalized if they don’t get to see the grade but your still taking it before transferring?

@bomnd I don’t think so man. :slight_smile:

For the pre-reqs, I have a friend who got admitted by UCSD for international business without having Cal 2 completed. I think it’s totally up to the admission office to decide. You can get in without pre-reqs done. I have also seen transfers from previous spreads who got in without pre-reqs done.

It is rare but it’s not impossible. For UCB and UCLA, however, they are stricter on pre-reqs.

@willowstil no everything is completed, and GPA and work experience wise I’d consider myself a competitive applicant. However from reading last years transfers comments, and other school transfer forums, I’m just surprised as who is getting accepted vs rejected.
