I am currently going into senior year of high school and am looking into attending UCSD next year. I have a very curious question regarding taking a language. I currently am being looked at for recruitment to UCSD and spanish isn't my strength. I have taken two years so far and the coach at UCSD claims I have met requirements to be accepted. I really don't want to take the chance of pulling a low grade in Spanish 3...so I will not be taking a third year while in high school.

My question....if everything goes to plan and I am recruited/accepted to UCSD, what majors would not force me to take a language? I am currently looking into communication and am curious if I would have to take spanish as an elective.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Taking a second language is usually one of the choices for a G.E. requirements, although I believe you can take other classes instead to not have to take a second language class.

or does it depend on which college I am in out of the 6? Is communications offered in all 6 colleges at ucsd? I’m sorry if these questions seem as if they are coming from left field…I am absolutely oblivious as to what is required for each college. ONce again…any and help will be appreciated.

Two more questions…

What are my chances of getting into the John Muir College? Is it impacted?

Secondly, if I don’t take spanish this year…that means I will only have 5 classes. Do you think it would be wise to take 6th and add zoology?

No, no proficiency test of secondary language is needed, unless you plan on actually taking a college level language class.

I am a Muir student myself, and I think that a lot of people choose Muir College as their first choice due to its lax G.E. requirements (2 quarters of Muir writing + Cultural Diversity G.E. + 2 yearlong sequences of your choice in either foreign language, social science, or humanities.)

Having a 6th class your senior year would definitely help your chances because it shows admission officers that you are willing to work as hard as before even though it’s your last year. I guess zoology is a viable option, but I advise you to talk to your school’s counselor first.

You should have a decent shot at Muir college. I don’t think it’s impacted. Also, Thurgood Marshall College has really easy general education requirements. You don’t have to take a foreign language if you don’t want to. You will, however, have to take a few humanities classes (history, literature, ethnic studies, etc. You can choose them though). I think all the colleges have a communications major.

Oh yeah I forgot to tell you, none of the colleges are “impacted.” Some majors, such as all of the majors in the Biological Sciences division, are, however.

It depends on your colleges requirements. Take a look at the requirements for all 6 and rank the ones that dont have language requirements the highest.

You can be any major in any college. All your college does it determine where you reside on campus and what GEs you’ll have to take. For some majors, however, it is significantly easier to get all your units in some colleges than in others (in Warren with engineers, for example).

Some colleges such as ERC and Revelle force you to take four quarters of a foreign language unless you place higher. I took three years of Latin but have decided just to take four quarters in Spanish simply because I really want to know Spanish.
