UCSD Medical Scholars

Does anyone know how difficult it is to stay in the program? (i.e. meeting the GPA and MCAT requirements?)

the req is 3.5…pretty low imo. if you got in you will easily make 3.5. there is no mcat requirement.

i was interviewed last saturday and i talked to one of the med scholars and he said they notified him that he was one of the twelve the TUESDAY after his intervieww

ahhhhhh
has anyone gotten a call or anything yet?

nope… no call yet. I feel like they’ll take longer because more people were interviewed this time.

didn’t they say they’ll call us around April 15th?

yeah they did but they usually call earlier right ): i’m so nervous haha i really want thisssssss. but my grades aren’t doing too well right now. does the program review your final grades? or does it just go through regular ucsd undergraduate office. i’ll still have higher than a 4.0 like the program required but it’ll be a LOT lower than what i had originally…does it matter :/

lol I think I’m in the same boat. senioritis catching up to us XD

HAS ANYONE GOTTEN A CALL YETTTT :open_mouth:
keep us posteddddd

I got a call and email this afternoon if that helps :)

O: accepted?

■■■. did they just throw everyone who didn’t make the first 12 cut get on the alternate list?

Anyone else get in?
The actual letter came in the mail today :)

iceyfresh, yes they throw everyone who interviewed but didnt get in on the alternate list. i think its ranked too.

i was on the alternate list and the lady said a few people dropped out. send them a letter or contact dr kelly DIRECTLY. i cant believe i didnt do either. you might just be able to get into the program that way because it is for sure that a few people will not go to ucsd.

Congratulations to everyone who got in!

I got the invitation to apply but for some reason I didn’t apply. Now that I realize how tough the MCAT and med school acceptance is, I’m really kicking myself for not applying.

BUT I think I can alleviate the regret if someone tells me that I would’nt have gotten into the program anyway.
So, what would my chances have been (low, i hope)?
GPA - 4.4
SAT - 2280 (800 math, 760 cr, 720 writing)
SATII - 740 US history, 720 math, 660 physics, 700 bio
APs - Phys, Calc AB, Econ, US Hist - 5; French - 3
EC: hospital volunteer ~100 hrs
president of model UN and a human rights club
member of many other clubs
One of my UC app essays was about why I wanted to go to into med, so idk if I could use the same one for this.

you would not get in. bad med experience.

Liar, I had 0 hours hospital volunteer and got into a combined degree program

nice. must be a good interviewer. i wish i were.

its true. you dont need medical EC’s to show your passion for medicine. except that it probably takes the most articulate person to convey it with only words.

Any other opinions?

it doesnt matter. its over now…the opportunity is gone.

since you have no EC’s, the once initial chance to convey your passion for medicine is your essay. you would need a strong personal reason to convince them. then, when you interview, they will ask again and even more detail. if you slip up, you have no fallback (ie med activities) and youre screwed.

med activities are important. how can you choose a career that you have never had any experience in? thats why med activities are basically a necessity.

What kind of med activities do you mean (aside from volunteering, cuz I have that)?
