So, I think it's time that the combined program at USC (University of Southern California) got it's own thread since people seem to be asking about it lately. I know I'll be lurking next year on CC and hopefully some of the other Bacc/MDs will, too, so feel free to ask away, speculate, etc. and good luck! Fight on.

Yeah, we definitely need to sticky this.

I'm a bacc/md as well, so feel free to ask any questions about this great program.

there already is a thread--- check USC med

What are the undergrad requirements for the BA/MD program? Is there a required GPA/MCAT?? blah blah blah???

The website isn't specific.

Whatever. HPME and UMKC and GPPA and the other programs have threads, so I thought it was time we needed a new one.

@friedrice:

I don't think I've been told directly (I think they're going over it with us the first week of classes), but I'm almost sure you need an overall GPA of 3.0, a 3.3 in the pre-med requirements and either a 27 or a 30 on the MCAT with at least 9s on each of the three sections.

Can you post your stats and tips for applying to the USC program

Hurray for a sticky!

As for tips...it's really a crapshoot, lol. Last year, about 1000 kids applied and they only invited 100 back to interview. From the Bacc/MDs I know, perfect, pristine stats are NOT everything, nor is any medical experience. The Bacc/MD is really unique in the sense that they look for kids who are going to take their four years and get the most out of USC and college in general rather than just study so they can get into medical school. Focus a lot on your essays and try to display multiple facets of who you are--they want to be interested enough to sit down and talk to you in February and March.

Right, USC looks for a student who has taken advantage of the opportunities available to them in high school, and will take advantage of the opportunities available at USC. Unlike other med programs, these opportunities are not restricted to purely medical interests.

Basically, it gives individuals who are sure they want to be doctors a chance to explore one of their other interests before entering medical school. (Your other interest can be biology, as mine is).

so u don't need to have like solid medical ECs for this? like is volunteering at a hospital enough?
and this doesn't require SAT chem right?

You don't need them, but they can help enhance your application if that's what your application is geared towards. It all depends on the overall package.

Also, the SAT II Chem is not required, but I know a good deal of people in the program who took it.

Is baccalaureate same as BA or BS degree?

^ Yup, pretty much.

ok for someone like me, who doesn't have much opportunity to do hospital volunteer work etc (just the way things are in my country), how will these stats help me fare for USC's program or any others?
SAT 1 - 2190 (CR 700 MATH 780 WR 710)
SAT 2 - pending

unweighted gpa 4.0
EC's
-past treasurer current president of chess club
-interact club member for 2 years
-treasurer and soon-t-be- brown belt in capoeira (afro-brazilian martial art)
-placed top 3 in these church related exams for like 4 or 5 years
-spent a summer doing biotechnology at a university
-member of school's volleyball team in 10th grade
-CSEC (caribbean exams done in 11th grade) received distinctions in 9 subjects (english language, math , lit, bio, chem, phys, information tech, spanish, accounts)
-CAPE (advanced proficiency caribbean exams) - received distinctions in all 5 subjects - which is like the most we were allowed to do bio, chem, phys, math, communication studies
-mentor program last year at school
-school prefect
-previously sub-prefect
-top 1-2% of graduating class
-awarded honours all throughout high school
-read to the blind for about 2 years at this blind society

thats all i can remember right now
so what are my chances for this or any other BS/MD program?

It's hard to tell because it seems like the way things work in the Caribbean are a lot different from the way they work in the U.S. With that said, I don't know any Bacc/MDs who are international students.

Oh that's encouraging. Well, will the fact that I've basically just become a US permanent resident help any? (by just I mean we did the interview and got approved about a month ago)

It might because USC is big on diversity and big on international students. At the same time, though, I'm not sure how the College will handle your stats in comparison to everyone else applying, but it doesn't hurt to try!

Well I guess that means they'll place higher emphasis on SAT I and SAT II's and the other academic stuff for me then. Hope it's enough. Still not sure which combined programs to try for sigh.

where exactly is this other thread on bacc/md?

From the looks of it, it's disappeared.

unfortunate....do you by change know if we send our act scores to usc or keck med school or both?
