Hi I'm planning on going to UCSD as Undeclared in ERC. I'm planning on declaring my major as General Biology as soon as possible. I also plan to minor in Communications.

I know ERC has "Special Minors" focusing on human rights and whatnot but are these optional? Can I choose to minor in something else instead? If not, that'd be lame. I don't want to be constricted to a choice between these 3 "special" minors. -.o

Those are optional. You can minor in Communications.

I’m not sure if this is correct, but when my son visited for Triton Day, it was our understanding that in order to minor in any area, you have to first complete a certain number of units and then petition to minor. This is so that a review of your progress to date shows that you can handle the extra work load of a minor (or major). You can go ahead a start taking classes that will count towards your minor prior to petitioning, so that in the event you are allowed to minor, you have a head start. Of course this is only our understanding and could be partially or completely incorrect- there was a lot to take in on Triton Day!
