Hi, I’m a CC student majoring in chemical engineeeing. I started CC two years ago (2014) and applied for Fall 2016. I had all my Physics and Math courses but I didn’t take Organic Chemistry yet which is 10 more units. (I took Chem 101 and 102 already). I got accepted to UCSD UCD UCI and UCSB, and rejected from UCLA. I didn’t even apply for UCB because I knew I had no chance to get in. If I stay 1 more year in CC I’m gonna take my IGETC, OCHEMs and Biology 101 and 102. (Bio is only required by UCB). So what do you guys think I should do? Wait one year for UCB or UCLA or transfer to UCSD? I have a 3.88 GPA but if I stay one more year I can probably raise it to 3.9 or higher.
Why stay one more year in CC?
Why do you want UCB or UCLA? The prestige? I don’t see a compelling reason for you stay another year.
You have several good options so I agree with the above posters, why wait another year? Even if you reapply next year, there is no guarantee you will get into either UCLA or UCB. Embrace the schools that accepted you now and finish your degree.
I mean, the long-term orientation is a plus, but yeah, unless you just love CC and can’t bear to leave it, I have trouble seeing the point.
Go to UCSB! Best time ever
a starting salary for a ChemE is probably at least $70K. Which means an extra year in school costs you at least this much just in lost salary.
Since a ChemE degree is ABET acredited you’ll study the same things no matter where you go, and the starting salary is going to be similar no matter where you go. Recruiting is going to be similar at ucla vs other UCs if its ChemE you want to do (may be different if you want to go work on Wall Street or something).
In short, I don’t see a compelling reason to stay in a CC one more year. But its a personal choice. If you’ve always wanted to go to ucla for some reason then you might rationally decide that life is short and you’re going to do it anyway. But understand the costs, and that you want to do it anyway. Don’t do it because you think you’re going to have a better career as a ChemE if you go to ucla.
You live for maybe eighty years. Your career lasts maybe forty years.
You’re going to sacrifice one of those years to get a prettier name on your diploma?
If it was the difference between attending a CSU and a UC I could understand, but UCSD is a world class school. I don’t see the problem.
I got into UCLA this year but if I hadn’t I would have been perfectly fine going to one my other options (UCSD or UCSB).
Look at the downside too! What if for some reason (out of your control?) you screw up the next year and loss your chances for even UCSD and others which you are already admitted too? It is a big gamble.
(UCSD is a great school. Don’t loss that chance!)
Why would you stay at a cc for another year when you could be at UCSD? Don’t waste your time. UCSD is a great school and there is no guarantee you would be admitted to it again! You have great choices - make one! Don’t whine over not getting into UCLA.
Head directly to one of the outstanding schools that accepted you.
