UCI offered a full ride ($22,000) (not sure if it’s for four years, but let’s just assume it is) - UCSD offered $9,000. Would it be a better choice overall to choose UCI over UCSD for someone who is probably going into medicine. Money is an issue, but she REALLY wants to go to UCSD.

Ooh, that's a tough one, both have pretty good med. schools. Initially my pick would be whichever school I could earn/maintain the highest GPA. But, a secondary consideration, a big one, is debt. Hmm, I would def. pick UCI w/ the full ride for undergrad, if for no other reason than to stay out of debt before medical school. Later, I would try for med school at SD.
Tell her good luck. :)

UCI is the wiser choice...unless your friend hates UCI for some reason, or the family is rolling in money.

Go for UCI with scholarship.

ahh i'm going through the same thing!

uci is giving me pretty a full ride (probably a surplus of spending money).

and sd is giving me some money but i'd hafta take in loans 6k a year. graduating with 24k in debt!

i really wanna go to sd because i live 20 mins away from uci. i wanna get away from this area so bad....! ugh, i'm stuck too.

you gotta ask your friend WHY she wants to go to sd and not i.

she loves the campus, the school itself, the atmosphere, everything - she's been talking about wanting to go there for like a year. uci was a total back up.

tuff call because i'm sure she WILL do better in school and WILL have a better chance at getting into med school BECAUSE she will be happier at sd (assuming that she will be happy motivated and sd lives up to her expectations. this is because the happier you are concerning the campus life, the more likely you will be motivated to learn.).

however, she should be aware that she's gonna take in 80k minimum in loans to pay for her med school.

you can either think of paying for loans of SD as bare change assuming that she gets a good career and pays off that 80k anyways..

or you can think of it as adding on to the burden of paying back the 80k.

and uci is pretty good for med school anyways and its not forsure that she'll absolutely regret not going to sd and hate it at uci..

something has to give i guess.

wow, i'm pretty much in the same situation as well..

but i'm curious...is this the regent's scholarship at irvine? because if she takes that, she'll be in the chp, which is a very impressive (and competitive!) program that sends a lot of people to the top med schools. and regents itself gives plenty of perks.

but if she decides she likes the atmosphere at sd, to heck with it - go there! for either choice she'll still get the best education for a low price. :)

but buerre's sd-for-med makes a lot of sense. agh, can't decide.
