UCSD Sixth College?

I got accepted to Sixth College for Chemistry! However, I haven’t heard any positive thing about it while I was applying, so I ranked it last (just like the majority of the people). So, I want to know why UCSD is ranked last. Are the classes bad? Especially for Biological Sciences?

I’m considering accepting UCSD. Basically the only thing that’s stopping me from doing so is the fact that I don’t know much about Sixth College. Does it have a bad reputation?

Honestly, Sixth is one of those places that people joke about more because it’s an easy target than because it’s actually bad. For one, the colleges are generally so similar that it doesn’t make a huge difference (six colleges, one university (is the propaganda that UCSD uses to get Revelle and Muir kids off each others’ throats)). Each college has loads of activities and its own vibrant culture, and Sixth is no different. They’re really spirited and most people don’t regret the college they end up in whatsoever.

More objectively (slightly):

  • Sixth is far from everything. Get ready to walk or consider a bike.
  • Sixth res halls are okay. Not fantastic, but livable. Their suites are pretty comfy and the kitchens are nice. Looks kinda like a summer camp though. The first floor ceiling is a little lower than most.
  • Sixth apartments are really nice. Most second year overflows end up there so it’s a huge, diverse community. My friend who lived there and in Keeling said he liked Sixth better (which blows my mind because the Keeling Apartments in Revelle are unbelievable).
  • The dining hall Foodworx is really small, but the food isn’t bad. I haven’t tried either of the food trucks but I’ve heard mixed reviews. It’s kind of a long walk from the res halls. The market has a decent variety.
  • The GEs aren’t terrible (I’m a Revelle student though, so my perspective is skewed). CAT can be interesting, and Practicum (sounds) useful.

That said, I still make fun of my Sixth friends for not having a real name yet, for the campground style dorms, and the fact that in Muir and Revelle we’re (probably) closer to the beach than we are to Foodworx. No plans of stopping.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Welcome to the Triton family

Do you mean why Sixth is ranked last? Not everyone does. I ranked Sixth I think second or third when I applied to UCSD and Revelle last.

The main difference between the colleges are the GEs https://sixth.ucsd.edu/academics/requirements/index.html

Other than that, the dining halls and dorms really only matter (for most students) during your first and second year until you move off campus. And they’re fine. I lived in Muir and we would still trek out to Foodworx every once in a while to get their build-your-own pizza.

I wouldn’t not go to UCSD just because of Sixth. That’s like not choosing a college because you didn’t get into the dorm you wanted or you got a double when you wanted a single. It’s kind of silly. And I personally don’t think any of the colleges have GEs that are so heinous, you would choose not to go to UCSD just because of their requirements, but that’s just me.
