UCSD Tag GPA increase to 3.5?

Does anyone know more about this? I googled UCSD Tag gpa increase and found a few community college websites in California saying UCSD is planning to increase its minimum gpa requirement from 3.0 to 3.5.

It appears to be true. I just spoke with a community college counselor on Thursday, who showed me a print-out stating this fact since I consulted him on my plan on transferring to UCSD.

edit: Ah, look here[/url”>http://www.palomar.edu/counseling/transfercenter/]here.

Wow… People who tagged to ucsd this year are lucky including myself haha

DAMN thats a fat increase. thanks for posting this! and berkeleyphil we’re HELLA lucky…although i would have the 3.5 minimum gpa requirement this year :D

Wow, yall are so lucky! I wouldn’t be surprised if UCSB and UCI also increase their minimum GPA requirements for TAG.

That is just ridiculous! Jesus Christ. 3.5. good luck for science majors people which including me.

Wow. I am so glad I decided to transfer this year. Ha.

Yep it’s true. People with 3.5+ usually get in SD though, it’s the 3.4-3.2 which don’t have a guarantee.

***, that’s such a huge increase! do you guys think other schools will do the same.
btw i’m an anthropology major and was looking to tag with a 3.2. sd is my dream. guess that’s over now =(

So glad I am transferring this year. My GPA is only 3.14 (pi!) lol :x

Honestly, 3.0 has been pretty low for UCSD anyway, considering how good the school is. 3.5 sounds about right. I mean… Shouldn’t a TAG be above the average admitted GPA? My only quibble with the change is that I’d have preferred the school give two years notice rather than one.

UCSD is just trying to increase it’s prestige and admissions standards. It tries to keep up with it’s big bros Berkeley and LA. i wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually drops tag and adopts a TAP program like Berkeley and LA currently have.

I’m just barely over a 3.5. Have a TAG also. I’m good :D

Good luck to those applying next year.

@Beyphy I think you’re right. Who knows if UCSD TAG will still be around a few years from now.

Any word on other schools increasing for next year?

^ i think ucsb might to a 3.3/3.4. but somebody else told me that, so i have no proof ;[

Interesting assessment, and you’re probably right on the money. I’ll be part of the unfortunate bunch who plans on transferring under this new 3.5 GPA TAG rule, but I’d be thankful to still TAG than having to TAP like Cal and LA.

UCSD is the 3rd-most applied to University of California after Berkeley/LA. I think it has to do more with them trying to control the overflow of applicants than trying to increase their prestige.

3.0 TAG to UCSD almost feels like cheating IMO. It’s the 3rd highest rated UC in most rankings, etc, etc. I think it’s fair and might even give people incentive to choose UCSD over other TAG-able schools like SB, Davis, Irvine, etc…

3.5 at once is such a huge increase. and it sucks because like myself, most people didn’t think they would increase it so much. If i knew i would of taken more units this semester so I could meet the 3.5 requirement.

Also, I think its very unlikely UCSB will do any increase since they increased their minimum GPA from 3.0 to 3.2 last year. I don’t see them doing it again this year. that would be insane -_-.

and a 1000 heart attacks were had at once.

Yes. They should have done a press release announcing they were upping it to 3.2 for students starting in Fall 2012, then 3.5 for students starting Fall 2013, then switching to a TAP for Fall 2015 and beyond. Like others have said, UCSD is right on the edge of being too good to offer a TAG.
