Just admitted to the theatre program. Would love more info from anyone with experience with UCSD undergraduate theater program, specifically acting training and playwriting. Double major? Study abroad? Preparation for possible MFA or employment? Looking for a mix of strong academics and theater training.
I work with theater a lot (I’m visual arts but I do design work for a student run company at UCSD) and… what specifically do you want to know about acting, training, playwriting?
Double major is possible. It’s very draining… UCSD is a very exhausting school and the visual arts & theater/dance department are not an exception. One of my stage managers I’m working with on a school play is a double major in theater & studio art and she is always on campus. Most theater kids live on campus because of rehearsals, dances, productions, meetings, classes, etc. I’m working on a student production right now (which is being produced by the department so go us!!) and we get a lot of support from the department. Lots of potential internships and employment, especially with La Jolla Playhouse (our backyard neighbors!). My producer is involved with a local theater and my director is doing an internship through one of her acting profs. As undergrads, we are pretty fortunate that some of the MFA candidates (in the theater department) work with us - collaborate, do productions in huge festivals, overlook and revise scripts, etc. It’s an awesome community. I’m not in the theater department or in the major but I 100% love it.
You’ll get the training. UCSD might not be known for their arts, but the arts community we have is amazing. Our professors are working professionals in the community. Not sure if there are other specifics you need to know but… it’s awesome.
Study abroad is possible, I’m sure. I don’t know too much about it but I’m sure you can probably do a summer or spring abroad to fulfill a GE or two!
@thinkweism Thank you so much! That was helpful.
@yorkiemom might find this helpful as well.
