UCSD Transfer Student English Proficiency

Hi everyone! I am currently a CCC student and waiting for UCSD’s transfer decisions. I have a big concern though. So I am an international student whose first language is not English, and I did not go to high school where the instruction was English. However, I have been going to CCC for three years, and finished one English composition course with a C (I did not submit one major essay that’s why) and finishing up the other with an (likely to get) A by this semester.

UCSD admissions states:

International Students Applying as a Transfers
If your native language is not English, and your high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, you must provide evidence of English proficiency in one of the following ways:

Achieve grades of B or better in the required UC-transferable English composition courses.

Submit a TOEFL score of 83 or higher (internet-based test).

Submit an IELTS examination with a 7 or better band score (academic module).

Does this apply to me? Transfer counselors at my college said since I am going to a college in the US and taking English composition courses, I would be fine. And I thought so too because my college education is in English. But I have seen threads saying they got rejection / admissions canceled because of the English proficiency requirement. I am so confused. And If that is true, I am 100000% going to be rejected since I have a C on my English course. I know I should have asked the admission office earlier, but I found out this a few weeks ago and there was nothing I could do at the time. Help me out please!!

Maybe @Gumbymom could help me?! please I would appreciate it.

@SleepyOli:

From the UC website:
** Applying as a transfer student?
You can demonstrate English proficiency by completing the two UC-transferable English composition courses required for transfer admission and receiving at least a “C” or “B” grade/mark, depending on the campuses you’re applying to. If you do so, you are not required to submit IELTS/TOEFL exam scores.

You are considered proficient if:

You’re applying to Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside or Santa Barbara and received grades/marks of “C” or higher in the English composition courses.

You’re applying to UCLA, San Diego or Santa Cruz and received grades/marks of “B” or higher in the English composition courses.
Some campuses may request an interview to determine English skills during the application review process. Davis, UCLA and Santa Barbara may strongly recommend or require additional English proficiency testing for applicants admitted to their campuses. **

I would contact UCSD admissions to confirm.

Yes, that is the rule for International students at some UCs (not all). They have a B grade requirement. It’s not highly publicized but it is in place.

Literally that’s the only C I have I can’t believe this I didn’t even apply to Berkeley because I wanted to go to SD so bad My counselors told me very confidently, so I did not even think about looking it up I wish they publicized it on the UC app when I was applying

@Gumbymom @Ohm888 Thank you so much the decision will likely to come out tomorrow so I guess I will just take the TOEFL and try to appeal
