UCSD Transfer Students!!

bump!!!

hope more ppl reply to this thread~~

how are everybody doing with your cc classes~~~??

cool, congrats SunnyMoMo... I'm a Communications major too, Marshall college :)

Economics @ Muir

Planning to double-major with Communications, we'll see how the course load is after the first year heh. Hmmmm from what I hear...

Transfer students can apply for housing on June 2nd, but we have close to 0% chance of getting it. Soooo plan for off-campus housing! I've looked at a few rents and it ranges from $750-1750 to live by yourself. Best bet is a roommate or two to keep your fixed-costs down.

Oh right, it was Marshall. I keep forgetting the college name.

hey guys I'm going to be at Thurgood Marshall as a poli-sci/international relations major

so uh how and when do we register for classes? orientation date?

I think they'll send us something via email after we send in our transcripts/IGETC forms. Then we choose orientation date in mid august, thats when we choose classes too i believe.

Hi, I'm going to tranfer to UCSD sixth college in Fall08. I'm in San Jose too. Currently in De Anza College. CS major. Nice to meet you !

Have you guys found renting house?

I mean mid September. I keep forgetting UCs start school in September, not August.

I don't know if this is for the current year, but I found something which indicates we might have orientation in July:

John Muir College :: For Transfers :: Orientation

“I suggest you stay AWAY from the fraternities. One of my closest friends joined a sorority (Tri Delta, yes, the whore sorority) she ever since then, she’s had a tough time making friends that aren’t in her sorority. Frat kids are typically looked down upon by non-greek students (not ethnicity, i mean frats/sororities). They rip on them all the time, from the SD parties that I’ve been to. Also they’re not really that exciting, in comparison to SB (i don’t think anything is very exciting in comparison to SB). You drank 6 shots of rum, whoo hoo, you’re in the frat/sorority… yay.”

You are SEVERELY mistaken.

1 You’re not a UCSD student, so how can you tell someone what to do and what not to. So you went to some UCSD parties… doesn’t mean you know anything about student life. There are some groups at UCSD that are anti- just about every other org on campus.

2 The greek system at every school is different. The reputation of a sorority/fraternity at one school, is not necessarily the same at another. So making generalizations that one chapter is the “whore” sorority shows your naievte. And it’s not the case at UCSD. So whatever school you go to where it is the whore sorority, then that’s unfortunate, but it’s like saying the engineering department at 2 schools are the same simply because they’re both engineering departments.

3 EVERY school has a population of students that look down at those in the greek system. And for all sorts of reasons. I had friends both in an out of the greek system at UCSD, and most people that weren’t in it just recognized it wasn’t for them. I rushed when i was a freshman (i’m out of school now, transferred out of UCSD) because a friend wanted someone to do it with her. I never expected to join because I had the same concerns many have, but I got to know girls in various sororities and joined one. I had friends in every sorority and fraternity. And guess what? Since I’m a nice/social person, it wasn’t hard at all to make friends outside of the greek system. There’s no rule in a sorority that says you can’t meet other people, it’s up to the individual to make their own friends. But when you don’t live on campus, the transfer students that joined sororities and fraternities that I knew, all had a positive experience. It gave them a community that transfers to ucsd (which acts like a commuter school with practically o students living on/near campus after sophomore year) don’t really get.

4 UCSD is a great school for many people. It wasn’t the right school for me. But no matter where you go to school, as a transfer it is left up to you to find your community. UCSD’s a big school, and they don’t take you by the hand to orient you the way they do with freshmen (and believe me, that process isn’t amazing either). Joining a club, organization, etc is the best way to meet new people. Or be extra social in class. The only way to know what orgs and clubs are good for you, is to investigate yourself. Taking the opinion of someone that DOESN’T go to the school is a bad idea. So transfers, if you want advice from a student, let me know and i’ll connect you with one if I can’t help myself from the 2 years i went there.

Dude, resurrected from one year ago.

Hi guys Im a RCC/MVC (Community College) student who is getting ready to transfer to UCSD through TAG. I was just wondering if any of you could answer this question for me:

As of right now I have 56 transferable units. This fall im taking 14 units which comes out to 70 semester units (105 quater). The pamphlet says- A maximum of 70 semester or 105 quarter UC-transferable community college units will be accepted toward graduation. For CCC units above these limits, subject credit is awarded.Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate units earned prior to high school graduation do not apply to the unit limit.

So, I’ll be at the limit by the end of this Fall. Part of TAG says I have to keep up the 3.0 GPA till the end of Spring 2011. So would my GPA after Spring 2011 not be counted because those units will have gotten me over the 70 unit limit?

Good question! I’m interested to hear the replies on this
