Currently a high school junior, about to enter my senior year and really want to open up my options and ideas to colleges. Trying to stay within California because I don’t want to pay huge expenses to travel out of state. However, if anyone knows any good OOS schools that offer large scholarships/grants to OOS students, please comment below. I would like to pursue anything in Biomedical engineering, Vet/Animal sciences, Registered nurse, or vet. tech. Anyone have any advice or opinions on what schools are good/advice on these careers? My current stats will be listed below:
SAT: -unknown until released in late may-
ACT: 28 (~1870-1910) (Planning to retake in June or Aug!)
UW GPA: 3.97
UC GPA: 4.29
10th gr yr: Bio H, Adv. Alg H, Chinese, Phys Ed., 10th Eng, AP World History:
11th gr yr: Astro, Chem, USH H, American lit H, Precal, Chinese
12th gr yr SCHED (not yet taken): AP Bio, AP Calc, Eng Lit, American Democ, Env science, last period still unscheduled (my school has very limited APs and availability for spaces)
HELP: would a free period my senior year look super bad?
E.C: worked since 14 (3 jobs/internships), volunteered 125+ hours, sports manager, HS Girls basketball team (3+ years, 2 years = Captain), Scholarship federation, Dance committee president/VP, photography club, dragonboat.
Please let me know on what I’d need to improve on, what looks good and advice on schools/recommended places. Thank you!
For Vet, you want to include UCD, Cal poly SLO and Cal poly Pomona. SLO also has an excellent and very competitive BME program, so aim for an ACT of 30+. BME will also require Grad school for the best career opportunities. For nursing, consider SDSU since high stat applicants can get a direct admit into their program. You are on the right track so keep up the good work.
Thank you! @gumbymom Do you know if a BME with a bachelors could find good job opportunities out of school? I am interested but don’t know if I will be motivated enough to pursue 6-8 years of schooling (for BME/Vet too) Would BME or nursing be more successful in your eyes? Also, would having a free period for my senior year be bad? I tried to take Prob & Stats or an AP but currently they’re all full or its AP Art which I have no interest in. (Consider I have volleyball from the first day of school till Nov w/ college apps & camping trips for my science based pathway)
Having a free period is not ideal but it should not hurt you as long as you have a rigorous Senior schedule to compensate. My older son TA’d for his Pre-calc teacher instead of having a free period. He was still able to work on his homework when not needed by his teacher.
I am no expert on BME job opportunities, but from I have been able to ascertain is that BME does require Grad school for the best job opportunities. I think Nursing would be a great profession to pursue but again if you plan to become a NP, it usually requires additional years of schooling beyond undergrad.
If you want good job opportunities with a 4 year degree, EE/ME and CS would be possible majors to consider.
