Congrats to all of you current and future UCSD students! I'm just curious on anyone's opinions of UCSD's Computer Science Program vs. Cal Poly's Computer Science Program. I am leaning towards Cal Poly because of the hands on experience but do not know very much about UCSD's program. Any help or personal opinion is definitely appreciated!

My kid was accepted to both schools and chose SLO over UCSD (and UCLA and several other UC’s) for the exact reasons that you state above. He is extremely happy with his choice and the school is delivering exactly what they said they would. We toured both campuses, dug deep into both programs and felt more comfortable with SLO.

So, how should you make your decision? Well, which campus did you feel most comfortable at? The best way to find this out is go to the UCSD admitted students day and also go to Cal Poly SLO’s Open House in April for all three days (make sure to be there Thursday night for the Farmer’s Market in downtown SLO). Again, you need to dig deep into the programs, talk to professors and students, etc.

I’m also considering this too, and I’m leaning towards Cal Poly and not UCSD.

I’d also choose SLO over SD for the same reason you stated. I got rejected from SLO :(, but am hoping to get in from the UCSD waitlist!

My son is deciding between UCSD/SLO/Santa Clara

He did get into Cal Berkeley (Econ) - and got a $40K scholarship to Santa Clara - so the cost is neutralized to some extent.

How easy is it to transfer into the CS program at Cal Berkeley (College of L&S) from Econ ? Not EECS.

Any advice about helping him navigate through the decision process is welcome ?

Thanks -

I actually had to make the same decision and chose UCSD. (except it was for computer engineering)
IMO I definitely made the right decision and here are two specific to cse reasons why:
UCSD is surrounded by tons of tech companies that are looking for internships. Its real hands on experience galore!!! Even students with bad GPA’s can find places to work both during the year and of course during the summer
*I don’t know everything about Cal poly’s program, but i know our’s is AWESOME. I’m talking tons of labs, helpful Tutors, really smart professors, and lots and lots of connections to big companies.
At my internship (very large tech company that paid a ton of money) we had 4 ucsd programmers and 2 cal poly programmers, only the UCSD ones got hired. Obviously this is a small sample size, but should be noted.

Sorry for my bad grammer but I’m answering as many questions about UCSD as fast and descriptively as possible right now.
