@khvn151 Hi!! What’s your major? Do most people get off in June? I’m kind of worried because UCSD says that the waitlist result will be released by the end of JULY.
Well it depends on the space of the colleges and you might not get your top choice college. If you applied for an impacted major it would be a little more difficult. However, if you choose a 2nd major that will more then likely be your major if you get in. I originally applied for public health (which is super impacted here) as my primary major and I choose pharmacological chemistry as my second. I did not get in for public health, but I got in for Pharm chem. I actually enjoying it so far and the amount of opportunities you can get here is amazing!
@khvn151 was it difficult to find housing since I feel like a lot of people are figuring that out now? also, are you glad that you chose SD after getting off the waitlist or do you wish you chose another school? SD is probably my top choice, but I have SB and Davis as backup. I went to go visit Davis and really liked it there, but I’d have to get a BA there over a BS /:
I think the majority of us got off May and early June last year. You’ll probably hear back before July.
Well I live off campus because I was fortunate enough for my cousin to be looking for a roomate at the time?but I believe that won’t effect your on campus housing chances because when I was applying for housing on campus HDH made special exception for me since I was waitlisted. So they understand.
It depends on what you would like to do! this school is probably the best for undergraduate research if you want to go down the path and have a ton opportunities for anyone in the STEM field. Some professors are bad, but there are some amazing profs I met so far! So I would say that I’m enjoying SD!! Also, There’s a ton of places in SD to adventure
Also there’s a Facebook page for off campus housing for UCSD students!
@BenSimmons What do they mean when they say their waitlist is unranked? Does that mean that they randomly pull people out of waitlist like a lottery?
@khvn151 are other students friendly? i know ppl call it “UC Socially Dead,” and while i’m not super concerned with parties/ greek life, i don’t want to feel isolated bc i won’t know anyone. (i’m from bay area, so SD is a long ways from home).
is it hard to find research opportunities as a transfer when others have already connected with profs?
They fill the colleges that have space. They don’t care about GPA or anything. If they didn’t wanted to put you on the waitlist you’ll probably be denied. So everyone belongs here. It’s just that they don’t have enough space right now. So that’s why it’s “unranked”
Oh you won’t feel isolated join clubs and orgs! That’s the best way to meet people of the same interests of yours and make awesome friendships! And i feel it’s super easy to meet people if you’re living in the village since it’s all transfer students and similar interests as yours.
If you proactively look you’ll get into a lab or whatever opportunity that presents it self! There’s handshake and REAL that basically is a job/internship/research posting that posts all the listings for UCSD students so a lot of people apply on there. Also, most of the profs are usually friendly and I would highly recommend going to their OH and getting to know them they’ll help you out in finding one! They want to help u as much as possible. Like I got a job working in the chem stockroom my first 2 quarters here and now I’m in a research lab. So u can definitely get research opportunities here if u actively look
@chloesalem I think it is kinda like a lottery. I don’t know much about the specifics of how random it is and how they choose people for either their intended or alternate major.
@khvn151 Cool! Thanks a ton. Does it matter which of the 6 colleges you get into as a transfer? I watched a youtube video that described the differences, but it seemed like just gen ed requirements, different English sequences, etc. I’m assuming we don’t have to take other lower diva as long as we meet the reqs on assist but am I wrong? I think I heard each college has its own housing/dorms but is that only applicable to freshman too?
If you have IGETC or something similar that will take out most of your GEs reqs and you will take 1-4 extra classes depending on the college. I would go on the college website and they list what you will have to take as a transfer student if you have IGETC. Other then that the college doesn’t really matter you will be taking mostly upper divs and major classes.
Each college do have their housing/dorms, but since you’re a transfer student you will most likely live in the village (where all the transfer students are). If there’s overflow you’ll probably be place in a random college that have avalonle housing.
@khvn151 I think I will have to find housing independently, through FB group or whatnot, because I plan on sharing a room with my partner who won’t be attending UCSD.
That’s kinda a bummer having to take extra lower divs because that wouldn’t be a thing for me at other UCs and I hope to graduate in 2 years. I have IGETC done. What type of lower div classes did you have to take for your college and which college are you in?
Oh nice! Yeah you can def find something off campus yeah that’s true oh yeah and you would have to take one DEI class which is for the uni? but I’m in Muir and I just have to take 1 writing class.
I am a general bio major and chose my alternative to human biology. Do u know of any who got off the waitlist with this type of impacted major?
Yeah I know some bio people that got in.
@queen_ofthenorth Curious, what is it you liked about Davis? I just don’t find myself caring much for it though everyone is recommending it…
@kristinpete I felt the exact same way before I went there; everyone kept telling me it was a great option and I was just not into it. I went on a tour, which I didn’t do when I went to SB, and got “good vibes” from the campus and people. I think I had very low expectations for it because I pictured it to be a rural farmland with nothing to do. It’s a cute college town and I could just see myself living there. People seem friendly, approachable, and happy there. A student there told me the academic environment is apparently more collaborative than competitive. There’s a lot of student resources too but I’m sure that’s the case pretty much everywhere.
On the other hand, when I went to SB I had super high expectations and felt kinda let down. I want to go give it a second look. IV just feels super congested to me and while I love the beach, it’s not a necessity for me. Santa Barbara itself is just kinda a place for wealthy people to retire.
