UD Honors - Acadmeic rigour

Please share your views about acadmeic rigour that UD honors offers (engineering majors). Experience that you think make UD honors unique and experience you are not happy about.

I’d say overall being in the honors program adds a significant degree of difficulty to your classes. There are some things all the honors students have to do (take a more difficult honors english and colloquium, take 17 credits a semester to achieve the general honors award, maintain a certain GPA, etc), however, a lot of it depends on the individual department. Overall, your honors classes will be a lot smaller. Some departments have honors classes that are harder than normal classes as the teachers want to try and push you to learn more since you can handle it, some are easier than normal classes as you get much more individual time with your professors. It really depends on a class to class basis, but overall I think you end up with a better education as a whole.

I’d say I’m happy with the honors program. You get the best housing, priority scheduling which helps a ton, and have access to some really cool honors exclusive events (weekend trips to different cities, free tickets to musicals / plays, special honors speakers, etc). It can be a bit tough at times because you have to stay on top of your studies (you need to keep a 3.2 GPA first year to stay in honors, 3.3 every year after), but that’s nothing compared to the benefits if you ask me.

Thanks for sharing your experience. May I ask which major you are in?

I’m a mechanical engineering student.
