My daughter has been accepted to both UDEL (pre-Vet) and NCSU (Animal Sci Vet track). She is out of state for both and trying to figure out which one to accept. There are pros and cons to each. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and good luck!
Which is the cheapest allowing her to graduate with the lowest debt? That is a HUGE factor. Vet school is very expensive. Also where does she feel she would get the best grades. Personally if finances were the same I would choose NCSU. The have an awesome vet school which can lead to undergrad opportunities. I don’t know if there is any path to residency in NC but if there is I would pursue it prior to applying for vet school. At NCSU and the surrounding areas there are lots of opportunities to get experience and jobs and research. I don’t know much about UDEL. My son Animal Sci Vet track and loving it! (not at either of those schools). He has talked to people who are in vet school at NCSU and they really enjoy it there.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Unless she gets money from NCSU it would be cheaper and significantly less travel to attend UDEL. But we loved NC when we visited and the Vet College. Could go either way at this point!
Universities with vet schools, like NCSU, typically have strong pre-vet programs. UDel has no vet school, which may put their pre-vet program at a disadvantage.
If you are not a North Carolina resident, then it may be hard to get into NCSU vet school, even if you do go to NCSU as an undergraduate. Most vet schools are at state universities, and they reserve most of their spots for state residents or for residents of other states that have cooperative agreements.
if you are a Delaware resident, then the state of Delaware apparently has cooperative agreements with the University of Georgia and with Oklahoma State. So you would most likely go to vet school at one of those two.

Thank you for responding. So many things to think about. She would not be a UDEL resident as we live in MD. Our Vet School would be Virginia Tech. It’s hard to know what really will happen in 4 years. I agree if she really wants to get into NCSU Vet School she will have to first be an instate student.
If UDel is significantly cheaper, then it’s the better choice because vet school is very expensive so you want to spend as little as possible on undergrad while still maintaining quality of life.
As said above you really need to look at the costs for all the years, in state vs out of state not just undergrad alone. If it is more expensive to go to NCSU but she can get residency and then the four years of vet school are significantly cheaper that could be the option. If UDEL is cheaper and has all Virginia Tech’s required courses and she could go there then that combination could be the best option. We had to look at all of that before our son made his decision. It is a lot to think about. Make sure she had shadowed vets or does some this summer to help her make sure this is the right path to pursue. Doing that can make or break a student’s decision. For my son it just reinforced that is what he wants to do. Good luck!
