UNC or UT

So I am deciding between UNC in chapel hill and UT in Austin for undergrad studies. I wanna be a vet so im planning to major in Biology before going to vet school. As a side note im also just interested in marine biology so thats a plus. Im from NYC so I’ll be OOS for both and tuition cost is no difference. I love big sports teams and school spirit as well as a good college town which both seem to offer. Im kinda split on this decision so any advice on the schools programs and campus/student life would be awesome!

Have you already been admitted to both or is this a hypothetical choice?

What is your home state?

Are your parents ok with paying full cost for either school??

If you have the stats to get into Carolina as an OOS student, look into Cornell CALS. There’s no better option for your interests, and you’d get reduced tuition as a NY resident. It has a vet school on campus as well as zoology labs like its world-famous ornithology lab.

Both UT Austin and UNC are terrific options for biology and marine science, so academically you can’t go wrong with either. Some notable differences are size (UT Austin has more than twice as many undergrads as UNC), setting (Austin is much more urban than Chapel Hill), and financial aid (UNC is more generous to OOS students).

Vet school is very expensive. Keep your costs down for college. Go where you’ll get a strong foundation in the sciences and lots of animal handling and vet experience.

UNC is a smaller school than UT and is ranked higher overall. You should look into the pre veterinary programs at each school and visit both. They have a very different feel imo.

If you haven’t been admitted yet, you do realize that it is really hard to get into both as an OOS! From our nationally ranked high school, UT will usually take a few more kids than UNC but not many! There would be a difference in cost if you can drive to UNC and you have to fly to UT. uT does not have freshmen dorms, not sure about UNC.

UNC has a legislated cap on OOS students of 18%- including recruited athletes, so when you look at the accepted student statistics be aware that the average stat for an OOS student is considerably higher than for an in-state student.

Fwiw, for marine biology, UNC-Wilmington is better than CH.
