UF Class of 2022 Discussion Page

Rejected
3.7UW/4.2W
Instate
30 ACT
Graduated in 3 years

Little disappointed I didn’t get in but I wasn’t planning on attending either way. Congrats to everyone who got in!

So we are also UF rejects. My kid was disappointed but has several friends in the same boat all headed to FSU where for what he wants to do it is likely a good fit. But like I mentioned in previous posts the standards that are applied seem a little curious. For an in state white male with full tuition Bright Futures plus the pre paid plan I suspect he was held to a much higher standard then OOS or a more “diversity friendly candidate.” And before I am accused of being a bitter angry racist dad let me share his numbers: 3.96 UW GPA/ 4.56 UF GPA; 29 ACT; well over 100 hours community service, including volunteering in a program that helps disabled children for the last three years. Also wrote in his essay how he overcame major life changing surgery that cost him half a semester his junior year yet he maintained his straight A grades even in his AP classes, which he took 8 of getting 5 or 4s in all of them. Obviously the weak link is the ACT, but the “holistic” review apparently discounted all else.

In our local paper today there is a front page story on how even USF is raising their standards but still is under pressure to remain “diverse”. They have 52% non-white student body currently and are concerned that when their standards are raised they will become to quote the story, “smaller and whiter”. That is an outcome that will not be tolerated on todays campuses. Consequently the bar will be have to be set much higher for certain demographics.

This is just the way the world works now. So bottom line is for anyone reading this that doesn’t fit a preferred demographic get your kids in SAT camp starting in middle school or just plan to take a hard look at out of state schools as an option where the school may value the higher tuition they can charge over whether he/she checks off a “diversity” box.

@Gator88NE
Thank you so much for your response. Do you think that the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will also consider my high school grades/courses? I took the foreign language in high school and not college and I was exempt from taking it in college.

Also, I’m curious to why they made a decison early, and I got my decision on the 9th rather than the 30th of March because I didn’t apply on time.

CrazyDad9, I’m a white Christian, I didn’t get into UF last year and watched my friends with lower stats get in. My parents called and and they came right out and said we are looking for diversity. We weren’t sure if they meant diversity in grades via stats or skin/religion etc. I was born and raised in Miami and love the diversity but did feel it was unfair.

@CrazyDad9 Your son’s experience is very unfortunate, and I’m afraid to say is indicative of the times. I’ve been watching my son struggle through middle school and 3 years of high school as a white male, and it’s rough. Walk down the halls of any k-12 today and lining the walls are posters celebrating everyone NOT white male. If you look at the gender demographics of many college these days, they are skewed towards women (UGA is almost 60% women) I have a daughter, so I am trying to appreciate both sides of the issue. The scariest thing I’ve read about all of this was research done in the trends of males going to college (which has been decreasing for years) — if the current trend continues, the last male will graduate from college around 2050.

Wake up, America. These are your sons!

@Aya07 Yes, they will be considering HS courses. Even for normal CC transfers, they look at the HS transcripts to make sure you’ve met requirements like the language requirement.

I don’t know the ins and outs of UF’s admissions process, but other than being “late” this is the normal process for a FTIC high school grade that has an AA. They often get referred to the college for a decision. UF only has the resources to handle a set number of incoming freshman students (all trying to take the same courses). However, based on the college and major, UF has capacity to take on additional transfer students. So, while you didn’t make it into the freshman class, if your college/major has the capacity (and you meet the requirements), they may be able to squeeze you in as a “transfer” student.

“UF is prohibited by the Florida Board of Governors to consider race in admissions, even as one of many factors in holistic review,” UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes wrote in an email.

Just saw this story that also speaks to the economic incentives that work against in state kids.

S in same boat. Will have AA and HS diploma in May. Letter says they have turned it over for review by the college of engineering. Computer science major. Has not finished all tracking courses. Will have 3 to complete. Thinking it will be competitive based on his major.

There is no way statistically to be truly “diverse” and use a common standard for all applicants. That has been shown objectively by any reading of the data. This is why the Justice Department is looking into how it is that Asian Americans are being rejected at the Ivy League schools at historically high rates compared to other minority groups who have increased admission numbers despite under performing on entrance exams compared to the Asian kids.
Thats why the process is called “holistic”. That is code for you can’t sue us because you can’t prove why you were rejected.

Son accepted Fall 2018
95.8 GPA 26 ACT OOS NY
Our school does not rank because his class is 625 students.
IB courses and college level courses-
He was accepted to FSU where my older son attends-he’s a junior, Ohio State, Michigan State, deferred Wisconsin and waiting on Clemson.
I will probably have the house divided…looks like he is leaning toward UF…How am I going to root for the Gators? lol

Harvard specifically states that race and ethic status are considered for admissions. UF does not.

To:CrazyDad9

We have the same thing going on in Georgia at UGA with our HOPE scholarship when it comes to getting in the school from in state. It has become almost impossible to get in to UGA from in state, so kids in our state must look out of state for a school like UF, who like UGA probably gives a little advantage to the qualified kid that applies to there school from out of state. I am not sure what can be done about any of it.

Can someone compare UF and FSU for me?

@CrazyDad9
Holistic by definition means no one factor will get you in or keep you out/rejected thus let’s not second guess the admissions selection committees as they got this down to a science and “OBJECTIVELY” the results speak for themselves. The student body at each of these top schools are strong in pretty much every aspect thus let’s stop feeling sorry for ourselves or make excuses. Bottom line “LOVE THE SCHOOL (WHICHEVER IT MAY BE) THAT LOVES YOU BACK”

The primary ingredient of your future success is YOU.

When are housing contracts released to admitted students? I’m so ecstatic that I got into the University of Florida and likely to attend, despite having to take out loans. IT’S GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR!

Waiting to hear from other schools, but most likely going to attend! Go gators, and good luck to those admitted and/or planning on applying next year! :slight_smile:

@justdoesntmatta I’m with you all the way, but if I don’t have the money, I don;t have the money. I’m faced with either getting a job and attending UF, or what’s basically a free-ride at UCF. Like I said, I’m not afraid of hard work,but I want to go to college to study, not work and study. Thankfully, I know that most folk responsible for making hiring decisions for engineering grads aren’t as comically (hilariously) biased as you.

@Juckerz
Deciding where to attend is a very personal choice with many variables and yes, financial part is a major one. However, let’s not be naive… in the real world the school from which you obtain your education and training does influence future paths / options. Some recruits don’t even bother seeking graduates from some schools. That’s not hilariously, on the contrary, it can actually be sad for some candidates with great potential but in the real world… the nice guy does not always finish first. It’s reality

As with every investment where you put your money matters.

I am not knocking any schools, that is, as long as we are comparing apples with apples. Let’s not pretend that getting your education from a tier 1 school is the same as getting it from a tier 5.

YES, graduating with the minimal amount debt is the right mentality and goal.

@Volunteerism I know, I know, you’re 100% correct, I find myself swinging more and more towards taking on those loans and choosing UF. I guess a bit of debt is a small price to pay for a better education. I’m very grateful to my parents for the 529, and I’m grateful to Florida for the fantastic Bright Futures program (we are so blessed here in Florida to have this)… guess I’ll just have to nut-up and cover the rest myself.
