First of all, when should I look at Gator Jobs if I am starting in the Fall semester? At the moment, there are only student jobs in about 10 departments (library jobs require you to work during the summer semester too). I expected a lot more offers; I'm not sure if they've already been filled or if they have not been posted yet.

My biggest worry concerns the curriculum vitae/resume and cover letter. What goes on it? I have no idea what to attach to my applications beside possibly schedule. I've always been told that anything done in high school is useless once you enroll in college, but that's all I've ever had on my resume. I have no employment experience, which is part of the application anyway, so that doesn't help me. So yeah, if anyone could inform me of what is expected on a resume, that would be greatly appreciated.

this was exactly my experience as an incoming freshman. work study is not well suited for freshman, unfortunately. more jobs should show up as time goes on (its still pretty early, i imagine), but don’t make any financial commitments that assume you will get a job in the meantime.

put together a resume with high school stuff on it, since thats literally all that you have. unless you had a job in high school, its not going to help you much, but is still better than not having a resume at all.

just apply for whatever job you’ll do and cross your fingers (and probably follow up).

Thank you. That is all relieving to hear. Perhaps it’ll be better in my spring semester so I’d at least have a semester of college. Some jobs require a certain GPA, and I’m sure they mean my UF GPA.
Is it even common for first year students to get a job?

i honestly don’t know. i had a class with someone who worked in the dining hall with work study, but other than that i didn’t know anyone else who had work study. i did manage to set up a few interviews over the course of the first semester, but the interviewers tended to be flaky and so nothing happened. i eventually gave up and got a TA job through a professor the next year.

definitely try, but maybe don’t take it hard if nothing happens? i really cant say whether my case was an anomaly or not. certainly i could have tried harder, but it wasn’t worth the added stress.

I will most definitely give it a shot. Hopefully I’ll get somewhere, even if it’s just improved relations with a professor.
Ah, I was a bit worried about the stress. Maybe a job during the first year wouldn’t be right for me since I’m interested in clubs and leisure classes. I heard from a friend that she wouldn’t have been able to fit a job into her schedule with pottery class.
Thank you for your responses :)
