Ok... So I found out that I didn't get into the UF Honors (they told me my essays weren't that great).

But... UF Honors is extremely important to me, because I plan on transferring after my freshman year (or after my sophomore year) to MIT. I know that they consider professor recommendations and research THE most important aspect in the app - UF Honors has small class sizes and has a greater scope for research.

What are my chances of getting lateral admission to the Honors program at UF? If you need to know, my stats are:
* ACT: 35 composite
* Val of my school
* AP Scholar w/ Distinction, Soccer Rookie of the Year,
* Was in a leadership group... blah blah, participated in other ecs.

I'm pretty sure that I will be maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA. It's just that I don't want to start college at UF, and then find out that I wasn't admitted (again) to the Honors program.

Right now, I can just as easily go to GaTech, but I'm not sure if I want to spend that much money (it's out-of-state for me). After all of the gossip I've heard about GaTech itself, I'm reconsidering my decision.

D was admitted to honors program coming in her freshman year (also valedictorian, ACT 35, et.). She took 2 honors courses honors enriched physics 2060 and 2061, I think the numbers are. Anyway, she had so much AP credit that she was quickly past Geneds, and as she started w/ Calc3, etc … there really wasn’t anything “honors” she wanted to take. So, she is not taking another honors course and will not graduate w/ the certificate, or whatever. However, she’s been working w/ a chemE prof on her research team since her sophomore semester, and she’s doing honors in her major. Not being in honors doesn’t mean you can’t get involved in research or get to know the profs. Take the initiative and investigate what you are interested in (research-wise) and email a prof. That’s what she did. Don’t feel as though you cannot “do what you want to do,” just because you didn’t get into the honors program.

@zebes: Thanks for the advice. I know that not getting in honors isn’t the end of the world, but I just thought that Honors allows for more professor-student interactions, so their recommendations will be personal instead of my resum

you’re ■■■■■■■■ if you think you’re going to get into MIT with a 3.5 GPA. you’re also not going to be doing the kind of research that gets you into MIT as a freshman.

i’m not saying its impossible, but it doesn’t sound like you understand what it means to transfer to MIT from UF, or what that process might even be like. you’d have to be a rising star at UF to switch after your sophomore year, and probably a prodigy to do it after your freshman year.

@Aforautumn: Really??? You think I don’t know MIT’s standards? My bro goes there, so back off. If you know anything about MIT itself, what matters is how much passion and hard work and actual interest you have in education.

Of course I’m going to maintain a 4.0, thats what I’ve been doing all of my life. SO get a life, and stop ruining people’s aspirations.

I agree, i shouldn’t have said anything. i lol’d when you read your post is all.

i would be very surprised to find out that UF has transferred anyone into MIT in the last decade, and I don’t retract my statement about what it means if you transfer after your freshman year.

what program are you trying to get into? what program will you be in at UF?
