In order to secure higher housing priority (hopefully he will be accepted), my S applied in August. He was recently notified by his school and College Board that he was selected as a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. When I emailed and subsequently called UF admissions to update his application to reflect, I was told UF could not do so since his appication had been sent. I've read on CC that if accepted, NHRP Scholars are automatically invited to UF Honors. Is this true? I believe the cut-off last year was a 2070 SAT for invitation to UF Honors. My S currently has a 2050 SAT(he will take again in December). If the cut-off remains the same as last year is it possible as an NHRP Scholar he can gain admissions to UF Honors without the additional 20 SAT points? I've also read he can apply for admissions to UF Honors if not invited with an additional application and essay. Has anyone had any success doing this? Last question, is UF Honors worth it? My understanding of advantages--HUME honors dorm is nicer, have a dedicated advisor, priority class selection, required honors classes are smaller--did I miss anything and is this accurate? What are the disadvantages--my son will have taken 12 AP cand 3 DE classes. Will UF Honors affect AP/DE credits? Long post--Thanks in advance.

I cannot answer all of your questions but as a freshman in the honors program, I definitely think being in the honors program is worth it. Hume is much nicer than the other dorms (although it is more expensive, so if cost is a concern you could try something in the Tolbert area). The advisors are also a HUGE bonus. I have received great advice from my honors advisors but my experience with general CLAS advisors has not been very good at all. And my honors class is great - I’ve met so many interesting people and it is small enough that I can ask questions when I need to.

However, as far as I’m aware honors students do not get priority class selection for general UF classes. I’m pretty sure that is reserved for National Merit students and other special scholarship students

honors doesn’t affect AP credits. the benefits pretty much end after 60 credits. you can do lateral admission in the spring, which doesn’t consider SAT.
