UF Housing Contract

The UF Housing contract is due on Tuesday. I'm not entirely sure if I will be attending UF. I want to, but I'm waiting on financial-aid decisions from other schools. If I miss the deadline, what will happen? I know that I will lose my place in "line," but could I still receive on-campus housing at a later date? Is off-campus housing any good or cheaper? My family and I simply don't have the $175 at this time.

Hiya,

If you don’t pay the deposit, on-campus housing wouldn’t be a sure thing. In fact, years ago, I applied late, and got put into a temporary triple (a double with an extra bed, making it a triple). It’s hardly the end of the world.

Most students only live in the dorms for one or two years, before moving off-campus. There is plenty of housing off-campus, and as a rule, it’s cheaper than the dorms (with a roommate or two). You would need to find roommates, and search for a decent place. It’s helpful if you have a car, but not required as you can take the bus to school, work, and shopping.

Living on campus the first year, makes it easier to make friends. If you do live off-campus, then make an effort to join a few clubs and get involved. You’ll have to work at it harder than those on-campus, but it’s very doable.

Good Luck!

Edit: If you get 2 or 3 roommates, you can really save by living off-campus. A typical dorm is $2,600 a semester ($5,200 for Fall and Spring terms); and it’s far cheaper to cook your own food, than to get a meal plan.

@Gator88NE Thanks so much! Being in a triple isn’t going to be the end of the world for me!
