UF Major Decision Help?

Hey, I am pretty much writing this to anyone that will listen. So here is the dilemma I am facing:

I am currently applying as a transfer to the University of Florida and I am really freaking out about which major to apply to. I am trying to choose between Economics and Sports Management. Every day it just keeps piling on and on…

Sports Management has been my major every since the start of college but I’ve had a bit of questioning it over the last few years. I love it and all but what scares me is the job prospects and not having the ability to get a job wherever life takes me. On top of that the Transfer admission to the college is very selective. Talked with an advisor for the college and she said a 3.4 GPA is competitive for the major and she only takes 10 out of 80 students that apply for the semester. I have a 3.41 GPA because I was recently at FSU which (sorry I might offend some of you) is obviously a tougher and more respected college than a CC but she said that won’t factor into the decision which worries me… So I don’t really know if I would even make it into the program if I applied. But this isn’t the biggest thing. Does anyone know what “competitive” really means in this sense? Sports Management is what I would love to do but I feel like that is a dream job for many. But I have looked at the Sports Management Club and it does seem fun and the college seems to offer a bunch of opportunities in the field. But I don’t want to end up a PE teacher or a High School Coach because of this major.

Economics I just recently ran across for a major. I took some college classes for Econ and I absolutely loved them. I never knew how much I would like it but I really do! I also talked to an advisor in CLAS and they said that if I met the minimum competitive criteria that I most likely will be accepted. Which is great! But unfortunately if it turns out I hate this major… I can’t switch. I don’t want to do something I hate in my life for a job but as of now I still love it! Obviously the job prospects for this degree will be significantly greater than a Sports Management degree and thats one of the positives. I just don’t like that there doesn’t seem to be a club or organization at UF thats just Economics. That kinda worries me (I dont know maybe I’m weird haha).

If anyone is in either of these majors or could offer an insight to this kind of thing I would truly appreciate it! The deadline is approaching for the Sports Management app so every day its compounding on me… lol. Thank you!!!

Also does anyone know why you can’t apply to two majors at once? Or maybe you can? I thought you could but I got a pamphlet the other day and it says you can only apply to one… (Which is why I’m writing this post  lol)

Oh and here is my overall Student Progress stuff:
Sport mgmt:
3.41 Overall GPA
3.6*(estimate) Pre-Prof
1/2 Major Req done
4/6 Suggested Done (1 in progress)

Econ:
3.41 Overall GPA
3.3 Pre-Prof
3/4 Major Req done (1 in progress)

Apply to the major you love. If you don’t get in, you can always re-apply to CLAS-Economics (UF has started to build up it’s CLAS-Economics program).

I would think a BS in either degree has about the same job outlook. If you get into Sports Management, think about doing the combined degree program, where you earn your BS and MS by taking one additional year of classes (it’s a 4+1 program). It would make you more competitive in the workplace, but it does take an additional year.

If you do go with Economics, you’ll need to decide if you want to pursue graduate study in economics. If so, you’ll need to take high level math classes. Oh, and why not start your own (school sponsored) Economics club? UF would be very supportive…

Good Luck!

Apply to what you want to major in. Considering job offers after you graduate is important but just remember that a degree is not a binding contract to your future job. Getting a job after college depends more on what you do rather than what your major is. As Gator88NE recently posted, both degrees receive similar job offers. Also, you could always major in one and minor in the other. Regardless of what your decision ends up being, study what you want to study. That is what is really important. I know this may sound dumb but flip a coin. If you are disappointed in the result you should major in the other subject. If you are happy about the result than you know what you should do!

Good luck!
