UF OOS Scholarship

Hey! Does anyone have experience with this? If anyone is OOS, and you got a scholarship, can you comment your stats? Thank you.

My daughter is OOS and only got the $2000 Honors direct admit scholarship. Her stats are SAT 1560, GPA 4.0 UW, not sure what her UF GPA is but she will graduate with 10APs and As in all of them, plus lots of honors classes too. UF was the only school that didn’t offer her a merit scholarship. However, she will be attending due to her being able to get instate tuition thanks to the post 9/11 GI Bill, which we are incredibly thankful for. I only saw one or two posts about OOS kids getting a merit scholarship and one of them had lower academic stats than my daughter. Of course, this kid could have a patent or something, who knows. I do know they give very, very few OOS scholarships. I mean VERY FEW!

@tif1972 Yikes, that’s very discouraging. University of Florida is D’s first choice (Virginia resident) but we would really need her to get some scholarship aid to make it work. D has nearly a 4.0 UW and (we project) a 1400-1500 SAT and is taking all IB classes.

S is a freshman at UCF BHC and received the $44,000 Knights Achievement Award scholarship. We would need something similar from U of F. Wonder what has to happen to snag one of those coveted OOS scholarships. Thought I heard at the U of F info session that a couple of hundred OOS scholarships were given out, but might have heard wrong.

@Gator88NE, I really respect your insights on this board. Can you share any wisdom on this subject? Thanks!

@tif1972 @VABogart
UF doesn’t give out many merit awards, In-state our OOS. Most of UF’s FA $ goes toward need-based aid (or some combination of need/merit based aid) for in-state students.

Here are the number of freshman merit scholarships awarded in 2016:

In-State
Presidential ($5,000): 165
Presidential Gold ($8,000): 39
Presidential Platinum ($10,000): 25

OOS:
Alumni ($8,000): 52
Sunshine ($16,000): 47
Gator Nation: ($20,000): 38

(data from page 12 of the 2016 Annual Admission Report)

The scholarships are awarded based on the same holistic and academic criteria as is used in admissions.
Holistic= (feels) random :frowning:

UF is trying to increase it’s OOS enrollment, so perhaps they will increase the # of OOS awards, but we’ll have to wait and see.

@Gator88NE Thanks so much for your helpful response! Looks like producing the best “holistic” application is the best that can be hoped for. She is attending the U of F Summer Media Institute this summer, so at least they’ll know of her level of interest.
