UF Overenrolled and Taking Less Students Fall 2017

We heard from our guidance counselor that UF overenrolled the past year and will be accepting 2,000 less applicants this year. I called UF and they said this was not true but our guidance counselor said that they met with the UF Admissions officer and ‘heard it from the horses mouth’.

Does anyone else know anything about this?

GC’s tend not to be the most informed people, even when they hear it from the horse’s mouth.

UF’s enrollment has and will fluctuate. The number of enroll students has been increasing, and if they feel it’s grown a bit high, they may decide to accept some number less than last year.

UF invited 13,624 students to join UF’s class of 2020. With more than 32,000 applicants, the school’s acceptance rate went from 44.4% for the class of 2019 to 42.5% for this year’s admits.

In 2015 (class of 2019) UF invite 14,237. UF’s yield (number of accepted student that enrolled) is about 50%. That year 7,106 freshman enrolled. I think in this year’s class it’s likely around 6,812 (13,624 X 0.50).

If UF reduced the number of accepted students to 11,624 (-2,000), then with a 50% acceptance rate, that would lead to 5,812 students. That’s lower than it’s been over the last few years, so that’s not likely. I could see them reduce the number by up to 1,000 (say 6,300 enrolled students), which would be in line with the numbers from 2014 and 2013.

UF’s enrollment data:

You can see how it’s fluctuated over the last few years. UF may accept fewer students this year, but 2,000 seems way to high.

Rather not start a new thread to ask this question but any thoughts on when applicants will start hearing?

The application Status page states, ** “If your file is complete, your decision will be available the second Friday in February after 6pm.” **

Do they typically hold true to this type of release for all applicants?

I think so @STEM2017. Last year I didn’t hear of any first years hearing before then. That’s when my son got the news.

Thanks @SouthFloridaMom9

@STEM2017 no one will hear before then (maybe like 5:50). They stick to that deadline and it’s really hard to find out if you got in before then.

EVERY year it’s the 2nd Friday in February…no guarantees that the website will not crash…

The only kids that may not be notified are those that earned an AA in high school. Their application also has to be approved by their college (Freshman are accepted to the university, but Freshman with AA degrees also have to be accepted by their college).

Our guidance counselor recently said the same thing: at a meeting of high school counselors and state university officials the UF representative said they would be enrolling less next year to balance out previous years over enrollment.

@soyunchico I just read your post from September regarding how it’s “really hard to find out if you got in before then”, what exactly does that mean? How can you find out before February?

@JPGator98 Really hard to find out before 6 pm…wasn’t really talking about finding out before February…

I think a few years ago they “accidently” posted some results early(in the day), but usually they stick to the time table and release results in the afternoon.
