I am having an incredibly difficult time deciding between UF and USF honors. I am going to do pre-med, but I'm not positive what I'll choose as my major just yet.

Financially I won't have to pay anything at either.
I live in Tampa, but I still have enough scholarships to live in a dorm.
At UF I will live a little off campus but in a scholarship house- I'll have a few chores during the week, but the rent is greatly reduced and my financial aid should cover it.

So, I would really appreciate any advice on whether it would be better to do pre-med at UF regular or USF honors.

UF is definitely more well-known outside of Florida (and in state? Truth be told I didn’t even know USF existed until junior year, and I live in Jacksonville).

I got into USF honors too, and my financial aid was the same from both schools (2 loans lol), so i chose UF just because.

UF is certainly the better school. Outside the state of florida, a million percent UF regular will look better then USF honors. Even within the state, that’s the case (UF’s alumni network is far far superior). UF also has far more opportunities for undergrad interested in doing research, which will help you get into Med School

I cannot think of any real advantage to going to USF.

If everything (money) was equal, I would do UF.

I will admit that I was impressed by USF’s honors program, especially regarding going into medical school. (And I will also admit that I was not in the least bit impressed with UF’s honors program - so I don’t think you’re losing anything by not being in UF honors).

I don’t agree that UF has more undergrad research opportunities though. USF goes out of their way to make sure that their students in the honors program get research opportunities. At UF, it’s up to you to find the undergrad research opportunities.

Heyy, i posted this on another thread but i’m not sure if you’ve come across it… here goes:

I was pretty much in a smiliar situation sometime back… After talking to many professors and parents and students who’ve been thru this… i realized that all of em said the same thing :if your going to grad sch, where u get ur undergrad degree from truly doesnt matter. Ultimately its ur GPA when you graduate from USF that counts for the kinda grad sch you can get into. not the school’s popularity or anything like that. Plus, since you guys have been offered Honors Admission, things are gonna be even easier cos apparently Honors at USF offers a ton of opportunity in research/scholarships/everyday lessons. Also, it is worth saving up the money that would otherwise be put into UF/NYU by going to USF now and eventually using it for grad school later(they cost wayy more).

Its just my take on it… and after much consideration, I’m giving up Purdue, UF, Univ of Vermont and Michigan State for USF. hope this helped! (:

I completely disagree with Singapore on this one. As an extreme example, do you really think a Harvard grad and a FIU grad have the same chance to get into a good med school? That simply isn’t how it works. It’s because a 4.0 at one place is not equal to a 4.0 at another place, and med school admissions officers know this. I have friends from nearly every florida school who have tried to get into med school. It is possible no matter where you go, but it’s much easier the better your school is (assuming you do well at your school). I simply don’t understand why you would hinder yourself in the AMAZINGLY competitive process that is med school admissions.

Also, it’s the same amount of money, so his advice doesn’t seem to apply. Why get less for the same amount of $$$.

If you’re not competent to go out and find a research opportunity yourself in a school this big, then, well, you should go to USF. Some of the dumbest people I know have still managed to find well paid research in med-related topics at UF.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Yes Singapore I saw your post earlier! Thanks! :)

Right now I’m leaning towards UF (but I pretty much change my mind everyday)… I’m going to try and apply for honors after the first semester hopefully it’s not too difficult to get admitted then.
I’ve always done very well in my classes, but I missed honors by 20 points on the SAT! :(

I do agree that USF honors does seem like that it will help a lot in finding research and their dorms are fantastic! USF also has that “7 year med” program that doesn’t really seem as special as it used to a few years back because they have changed it so much. Now: you still have to do well on your MCAT and fully apply, but you can still get rejected. [Accelereated Programs, 7 Yr. Medical Program - USF Honors College](http://honors.usf.edu/ap_med.html)

I’ve heard from a friend at UF that med schools see UF and USF as the same, but the classes at UF are a lot harder so you’re more likely to get a higher GPA at USF… but I don’t know if that’s true. Eh… I hope not if I decide to attend UF which seems more likely right now!

I know that UF has a similar combined undergrad/med program, but it is EXTREMELY selective. I don’t really know many specifics about that (I just know some of my friends got rejected from it). UF is a AAU member, so generally that holds clout when you apply to fellow AAU members. Med schools don’t all make their decisions in the same ways.

I mean none of us are Med School admissions officers, so we can’t say specifically how all schools view the difference. UF grad’s med school admission statistics are decent, not amazing. USF’s are a little worse. But there’s lots of factors that could play into that (I know some really unqualified people who think they’re gonna get into medschool, for instance)

just do UF. USF honors, and UF honors, offer almost no real long term benefits, and probably shouldn’t be a deciding factor. UF has a more enjoyable and engaging atmosphere, a better reputation, and nine times out of ten, they have the better programs.

I don’t know a lot about USF but my daughter wants to go to med school also. She was accepted to UF, Northwestern, St Louis Univ in the medical scholars program, Univ of Illinos Honors college and Penn State Honors college. She loved UF when we visited but all in all, when it came down to the end, it was between Northwestern and Penn State Honors college. UF automatically fell to the bottom of the list since she was not accepted into their honors college. She finally decided 2 days ago to go to Penn State and their honors college.

Oh, also, I’ve said in other threads, UF Honors is a complete and total joke; it’s not worthwhile to be in it.

I’m not going to insult my recruiters by even including it on my resume. Being in honors is not the same as graduating with honors. UF Honors is incredibly worthless.

Igmister, I thought that UF was your daughter’s first choice? Didn’t she file an appeal to go there because it was it was where she wanted to go? They granted the appeal and she got accepted but has since declined it?
Good luck to her at Penn State.
