UF regular vs. FSU Honors

Yes, the age old question. I was set on UF until I received my ACT score report and got a 29 - the requirement for Honors at FSU.
I would like to major in Biochemistry [or related science major] but my interests lie also in the humanities, politics etc.
Regionally, UF has a lot more prestige than FSU, but I don't know so much in terms of nationally..
Any help? Suggestions? I've looked at the past threads and I've seen that FSU's campus is a lot prettier/smaller, but is that worth sacrificing for what I might get out of UF's robust science programs?
I'm going to visit both very soon. [:

Also, I will have many of my pre-reqs covered [about 27 credits-worth] so idk how much that factors into it.

FSU Honors is preferable - if you indeed qualify. A 29 may be the minimum stated, but that does not guarantee admission to Honors. You could also petition for entry if you are not accepted at the outset.

My D1 faced a similar decision (though she qualified for both FSU and UF Honors outright. She also earned her biochemistry degree.) and is now a Med 1 student at FSU Med. She does not regret her decision at all and had a more difficult decision electing to go to med school or continue her biochemistry research in a PhD program.

FSU is preferable for other reasons as well, not the least of which is you’d have the opportunity to study politics in Florida State’s Political Science program, which is the highest rated in the state.

The science programs at Florida State are as good or better than the UF science programs: [FSU Highlights](<a href=“Rankings | Florida State University”>Rankings | Florida State University)

Welp, I had an over 4.0 UF GPA [I don’t know how that translates for FSU GPA], 29 ACT, in top 6% of my class [25/450]. Will have taken 5 APs. So I think I have a decent shot at it.
I really really like FSU’s political atmosphere though…hrmph. D:

Take a closer, manual, look:

Page 304: FSU #24 (world ranking)
Page 308: UF #153 (world ranking)

I saw FSU was ranked #24 - and that was really awesome! [: I’m not sure exactly what I want to do in politics, but I guess it all depends on if I get accepted to Honors. If I’m not into Honors, I’ll just go into UF. But based on what they’re looking for I think I have a decent shot. This has given me a different view - I’ll talk to some FSU students and UF students I know too [:

Talk to Honors and see where you stand. Forget the students, see the faculty and see what YOU can do. Don’t take a path well traveled, find your own.

Congrats on having two amazing options!

Florida State’s new president was an Honors student:

Thank you Ryan - I have looked at all three, I assure you. None were particular to my major, however.

fsu has the new chemistry building which is gargantuan. looks like we’re investing heavily into the sciences. idk if i were you id go to fsu.

I’ve made my decision so I’d like this thread to be closed.
Sorry, but the Honors program covers only the first 2 years and is “introductory”. I will have many pre-reqs filled already. I visited UF’s campus and enjoy its diversity and accessibility.
Also, for my major, Biochemistry, UF is a powerhouse.
Go Gators! x

Good luck at UF! It’ll be fine.

Thank you parent2noles! I appreciate the information you’ve provided and the support you’ve given on this thread. A commendable 'Nole indeed :)

That is EXACTLY what I was pointing out in another thread. When you look at the honors courses offered (I posted a link to the Spring Semester list), you will see that the list isn’t very long at all. Any particular honors student would only be taking a few of the handful of available honors class anyway. The only major benefit I see is preferred course enrollment while in school.

You will be fine at UF.

But for the record, the FSU honors courses are mostly 1000 and 2000 level courses because after two years, most honors students are working on Honors in the Major, and that is totally different. You don’t find “courses” by searching the course look-up function. You have a faculty committee within your major, work on a thesis, and if in the sciences you can do research. It is very individualized and not something you can understand by looking a course lists.

Yes, and Honors in the Major is offered at UF as well [apart from the honors program]. An honors thesis is required to graduate with honors, so I would have to do that legwork regardless of the honors program at FSU.
FSU is a very established state institution and is respectable in its own right. UF just has the strengths I am looking for and the “fit” I like best :)
