UF v. UMiami-Whats more difficult?

I recently found out that I got deferred from UM and I applied EA, but Im wondering if its even more difficult to get into UF Regular I. UM’s acceptance rate is 44%, but i dont know UF’s. Ahh now im all worried that if I couldnt get into miami, i definitely wont be able to swing UF…

What were ur stats? If u take a look at both of their websties, it seems that UF is a little harder to get into. However, this mainly applies if you are not a resident of Florida.

Oh btw, what were ur stats when u applied to U of Miami?

Hey..I live in florida

IB

National Merit Commended

3.2 UW, but because i got C's in electives like art and computers, my weighted is more like a 3.9

1410 SAT -740 Math, 670 Verbal

Ballet 10 years

A few volunteer

BTW..i go to the #1 h.s. in the usa according to newsweek with # of IB diplomas, so my class rank is less than desirable..im in the 49 percentile and i think 187/367

That ranking could have explain your defferal from the University of Miami. Also, University of Miami doesn't recalculate your GPA and therefore they would have used ur overall GPA of 3.2. I think University of Florida may be a slight reach for you due to that rank which really hurts you.

thank you for your help

np, anytime.

please bump...

Although the UF acceptance rate is about 52 percent, that is also because so many people apply there. I would say that UF is harder to get into than UM....and being in the 49th percentile with a 3.2 UW, I mean, there are no definites, but I wouldn't be too sure about getting into UF. One thing though, is I know they like National Merit and your commended could be a plus

Well, because you live in Florida, in my opinion you should have a good shot at UF. I mean, the stats for UF is this. Last year, 92% of it's students were from FL. The school also recalculate your gpa i think. I also thought amit was right about the 3.2 thing, how UM doesn't recalculate your gpa. Anyways, i think you should get into Uf, people i know with similar gpa to yours got in, and you have a higher SAT score than them. Goodluck!

Statistically, UF is a little harder than Miami to get into. But you know statistics...you really can't make definite predictions on a case-by-case basis.

UF does recalculate your GPA. I believe they use the "Bright Futures" weighting procedure. If you log on to the Bright Futures web site, and establish an account, you should be able to check your official GPA (which ignores non-academic classes, BTW).

Here is a link.....

I think you have a good chance. Obviously your rank is less than desirable, but being a florida resident should be helpful.

freakish- wouldn't the acceptance rate be lower if a lot of people apply to UF?

thanks guys, im more at ease with UF and anyways, if i dont get in, im going to TULANE!!

Reply to aselig01: Not really because basically they are saying out of 100 kids, about 52 would be accepted. There are more people applying to UF than UM every year, so logically the number of people admitted to UF is greater than UM (Just check their huge population of freshmans every year). So in the end, there are more people applying, but they also accept more people.

No, because there's a fixed number of slots...they aren't going to increase the amount of spots in the freshman class because more people apply from year to year (and if they are then they are the only school in the country to do so).

hi, accepted by UM through EA already.
just wondering, how's UM ranked among all the other universities?

My D was admitted EA to UM as well.

Just checked the US News & World Report 2005 college rankings. Believe it or not, UF is ranked at #50, while UM is #58. Great rankings, both of them. Of course, the main diff is # of students (UF>UM) and cost (UM>UF).

Hello Jnm123! When you say US News ranks UM #58.. what exactly does that mean?? Is this out of all colleges or private schools or what? Is it broken down? How can I find out where Southwestern University falls? Do I have to buy the book?
