On another thread I was called a UF troll after I had made the case that UF & FSU had superior Graduate Programs in comparison to University of Miami. I felt this research proves my point that UM has the weakest graduate programs out of the Big 3 Universities in Florida.

Miami is not a "big" university. When was the last time you were there? I can see comparing UF to other large state schools, but Miami is a private university and is small, almost tiny, compared to UF. Miami can't compete with the resources of a large state school. Your title should be "UF verses FSU/Rutgers/Penn State, etc."

I can't understand why Miami is always brought into the discussions about FSU and UF. Each school has their own distinct positives and negatives. Knocking a school is not going to make their school any better.

my gosh ssobick. Why are you so obsessed with numbers and rankings and comparisons? it's ALL you seem to talk about and post about here! Schools and institutions are there so people can make the most out of them. Life is too short to spend it bragging.

Keep posting, Ssobick. There are many of us that enjoy the information you pass on. University of Miami is a very well thought of college, however, it is a very expensive university to attend in our state. Never be afraid of information; do with it what you will.

"University of Miami is a very well thought of college"

I concede, their undergraduate program is very good (however with the exception of their Medical School they do not have much to offer in terms of their Graduate Studies).

"Why are you so obsessed with numbers and rankings and comparisons"

I like to dig up research, and to use this information to help my fellow UF Advocates in their endeavors to make our alma mater a superior institution.

Other way around. UMiami 'supporters' bring themselves in the discussion, claiming to be the best in the state. UF and FSU could care less about the school.

UF should strive in every way, shape, and form to embody and achieve excellence--at all levels. And to measure progress, there must be a system of metrics. Assuming that the system of metrics is, in fact, a good measure of progress, then focusing on changes in numbers and rankings is a meaningful and worthwhile endeavor. Let's put it this way: if you're not attuned to rankings, you are basically comfortable with mediocrity.

Miami is for rich kids from the North and Florida kids who thought they were too cool for FSU and UF, and so pay $40k/year to attend a college whose undergrad experience is marginal to the two other state schools. And like Sobick has said time after time, their grad programs are negligible other than their med school.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fine institution. Just incredibly overpriced for in-state students for the quality of education you’re getting. I think it builds an aura of faux prestige by being private and so expensive but once you get past the bling you’ll realize that their undergrad isn’t at all superior to the state flagships. The only people I know from high school who attend the college either came from rich families or go there on scholarship and loads of financial aid. For that kind of money, you might as well buy your way into HYPS which are obviously far superior schools.

Miami has a beautiful campus and the city has become more, and more cosmopolitan. These two factors are a major advantage over Gainesville. The fact remains, UF does not not have a big name nor a big following and unfortunately is very underrated. The top students from South Florida either go to UMiami, or leave the state to attend other top rated universities. Those who go to UF is sadly, because they just can not afford UM, whihc is very expensive.

You can argue all you want about the quality of UF undergraduate education, however, if you look at Princeton Review’ Rankings, you do not get very good feed back about the school from their own students.( reputation as a party school, jock school with horrible dorms in a lousy college town )

So there are a bunch of rich kids in Miami, so what? For those of you that like to look at rankings so much, USNews listed UF only two slots above Miami, which means NOTHING.

I believe the thread was started by a UF ■■■■■. The obsession that you people have comparing yourselves to Miami all the time is nothing more than a reflection of a very deep rooted inferiority complex. I understand being supportive of ones school but it is healthy to try to stay “rational” about it.

UFlorida is not UMiami, thank God (and the state) for that.
