UF vs. Emory

so for business...i know emory has one of the top programs, but it's going to be a lot more $$...what do you guys think would be best??

bump...i need to decide soon...

I would go with Emory hands down. It has an highly ranked undergrad b school. But if you are doing accounting then you might want to consider UF if there is a significant financial difference.

what would be the long term effects of going to UF as opposed to Emory??

I don't know how anyone could justify spending $30k a year for an undergraduate business degree. I hope you have a large scholarship!

My main major in college was MIS, and I'm sure it's different for different business majors but my experience was that many of the same companies recruited Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Baylor. Texas is a top 10 undergrad business school and probably even higher regarded for their MIS degree (many of the others aren't even ranked). However, that doesn't mean much when you are in the real world. I started work with grads from Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, Tech, Oklahoma State, etc and we all received the same salaries/benefits/etc and it didn't matter one bit where we had gone to school.

The degree is mainly just to get your foot in the door, which I'm sure UF would accomplish just fine. If I were you, I'd examine the average salary difference between graduates of Emory and UF. I would also consider the differences in the incoming students (ie if u would be an avg Emory student, perhaps you would be one of the top students at UF which would have a positive effect on your salary relative to the UF avg)

I would of course also consider the major that I want to study and how well the schools prepare you in that area.

However, if you are paying anywhere near full price for Emory, this seems to be a no brainer. (if you want to get into business, start learning by running the numbers and seeing how long it would take you to pay for both schools...as if u were the one paying for it [not sure if u are]...i'd also consider that most people don't graduate in 4 years.lol)

ooh my bestfriend is debating this too...

any other opinions?

bump.......

....bump....

ok i'm gonna bump one more time...then i'm done...i promise... :)

I was in the same situation but I'm choosing UF because of its value. As a resident of Florida with Bright Futures, my entire tuition is paid for. It has a very good business program and is ranked 10th (US News) in what I want to study, finance. I also took into consideration UF's alumni network of over 280,000 (mostly residing in Florida), which can be very beneficial for future endeavors. Education aside, I also thought about how I would probably have a much better time in UF, having the full college experiece. I haven't talked to one person who didn't tell me they loved that school.

Easy call. Emory. Yes its a lot of money, but with that comes a lot more opportunities. Not to mention, Atlanta is a great place to stay ( I live in GA.)

Emory starting salary:

For the BBA program, the average starting salary for 2005 graduates was $49,413. Of the students known to be seeking employment, 66 percent were employed immediately after graduation. Seven percent were enrolling in graduate or professional programs.

Now, if you can find out the average starting salary for Florida BBA graduates, that should give you a clearer picture.

Businessweek says 43k

so i guess the money is basically the same...but what about the rest...

Businessweek uses median salaries.

Emory (rank 4) = $50,000

UF (rank 44) = $42,000

I would go to Emory. My daughter was rejected from Emory (her dream school) last year and is now at UF in the business program. She is very happy at UF but I think she would have been equally happy at Emory. I would have liked to her to have experienced going out of state for college. Atlanta is a really nice city with lots to do. The student body at Emory seemed a lot more...intellectual than at UF. Classes are smaller at Emory (though daughter really likes the web classes at UF...they give her lot of freedom). I vote for Emory.

Check out the placement rate of Emory vs Florida--that may help make your decision. According to VectorWega's post above Emory's placement rate is 66%. I know that Florida State's rate is only 38%, but I would expect UF's rate to be higher than that.

If UF's placement rate is around 60% plus, then the extra cost to go to Emory is probably not worth it. But if UF's placement rate from the business school is down in the 40-45% range (and you are getting the $8K less in salary also), then you're going to want to go to Emory, since getting that good first job is one of the reasons why you go to college in the first place.

Actually, I just checked this out, and the placement rate out of UF is even lower than Florida State, so I suggest you pay the extra money and go to Emory.
