UF vs. USF: Engineering

I have been accepted to both the University of South Florida and the University of Florida and I am having a hard time deciding which college to attend. I have the Directors Scholarship to the University of South Florida, as well as the Honors College scholarship. I have not heard about scholarships for University of Florida yet, but I think it is pretty unlikely that I will receive one.

I am interested in majoring in Chemical Engineering, or possibly Biomedical Engineering. Many people say that UF’s Engineering programs are superior to USF’s. I am just wondering if UF would really be worth the extra money?

It will only be worth attending if you’re staying in Florida (and not continuing to higher education) or didnt get into USF Honors.

USF Honors college provide a lot of opportunities. More opportunities, I feel, that a student woul receive if there were just a regular UF student. However, of you got into UF Honors, that’d be a strong plus.

Think about what you want to do after your undergrad. Do you want to continue your education? Leave Florida? Would you want to leave Florida right after graduating or work awhile. It all factors into your decision.

UF is an extremely difficult and unfriendly school. All of my friends who go there are struggling. You are just a number to them. They make it unnecessarily hard. Also you are being taught by mostly T.A.'s which are grad students not professors. USF on the other hand is extremely friendly, encouraging, and you will be taught by PROFESSORS in all your classes except labs( there are just too many for one professor to teach all). A friend of mine went to UF to talk to someone about the College of Engineering. He talked to an adviser(who did not have a degree in engineering). He did the same at USF and was able to talk to the Department Chair - professor(teaches thermo) and chair head mind you with a degree in Chem E. Yes I do go to USF so maybe I am biased, but facts are facts. Every one who had the same choice as you, myself included, was happy with USF. Great school for a bargain price. But go to a school you feel most at home with.

UF has the best engineering classes in Florida and one of the best in the country.

UF has the best rated engineering program in Florida. I think it would be worth the extra bucks, assuming the difference in expense is not too great (say $10k).

err…I’m sure PirateQueen13 has made her choice, hopefully she’s happy raiding and pillaging Tampa or Gainesville.

UF does have the best Engineering program in the state and one of the top programs in the southeast (but I may be a bit biased).

However, the cost difference between USF and UF can be significant for many (especially if they’ve been award significant scholarships at USF).

I may not agree with some of kthart’s analysis, but USF does have a very solid percentage of full time faculty (87%, compare to UCF at 64%) and student to faculty ratio (16 to 1, compare to 28 to 1 for UCF). Both of these numbers are for the school and not specifically for the engineering department, but this is likely the main reason USF engineering is competitive with UCF’s engineering program.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I did end up choosing on attending USF and I’m glad I did so.
