UGA Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Yes. Admit rate may be different for the reasons you state. They historically don’t consider state of residency as a factor - so it is not easier to get in if you are from Georgia.

I didn’t go over every post on this thread, but based on stats of many accepted candidates it seems there is no difference between IS/OOS. One with min 3.7/3.8 GPA plus more AP /IB classes taken, then their UGA calculated GPA seems 4.1 and above, they got accepted. seems some even with 3.9 GPA but no core AP classes taken, they didn’t get in. Just my observation though, may or may not be correct. of course assuming their SAT/ACT test scores are in the range they posted.

Daughter admitted EA, but we’re baffled as to why she didn’t get auto-admittance to Honors.
Ranked 3rd in her class,
National Merit Semi-Finalist,
GA Merit Scholar
4.0 UW & a 4.54 “UGA” GPA.
31 on the ACT, but she made 1560 on the SAT.
She only has 3 AP classes (4 by end of Senior yr.) as she primarily did dual-enrollment in High School - completing 37 college credit hours so far (with another 18 to be completed this year).
She’s never made a B in her life.
She knows one student ranked below her from her class who did get Honors auto-acceptance. So, she’s pretty upset about it.
I’m just shaking my head and hoping this doesn’t deter her from seriously considering attending UGA.
(My alumni heart is sad. Still, Go Dawgs!)

UGA values AP/IB over dual enrollment, which was possibly why she didn’t get auto honors. But I hope she writes the essay. She’s a strong candidate for honors. Good luck to her!

@Swaxldog 1540 is a phenomenal score. Congratulations! I am having trouble understanding how she could she a 4.54 UGA GPA if she only had 3 AP Classes (unless she had a bunch of IB?). because that means there’s only 3 classes that could have extra points, and the rest would be counted as “4s”…I just know from my own DD, the math just doesn’t work to get the GPA up unless you have a bunch of AP…are you sure you did it right? I’m not trying to challenge you - obviously your daughter is off the charts bright, but just looking to try to explain why this might have happened.

Sorry! I meant 1560 - even better!

UGA doesn’t weight dual enrollment classes, so that is probably the source of the confusion. Also most likely the reason @Swaxldog’s daughter didn’t get an auto admit to honors since her UGA gpa would be much lower than a 4.5.

The UGA GPA is somewhat counter-intuititive…the same points for a grade-level class as an Honors…points for AP but not DC…but the rules are the rules and they haven’t changed in years…So we know what to expect. It sure would be nice on the application if after you entered in all your grades, it spit out an “unofficial” GPA … or even a GPA calculator on their website. I think 90% of the questions might go away.

Son admitted on the 20th in state. UW GPA 4.0, UGA GPA 4.33, 8 APs(all his school offers), 32 ACT (35 eng, 28 math), Georgia Merit Scholar.

Oops, I meant the 19th.

With UGA using a “holistic” approach when evaluating applications, essays are likely playing a larger role than in previous years. I believe HS grade inflation is real and nearly every applicant has a 4.0 or near-4.0 GPA. There needs to be a way to differentiate a group of applicants that look nearly identical on paper.

Agreed. There are 6 other kids selected from my Daughter’s school, all have 4 or 3.9 UW and same number of AP classes, but my D is the only one got in to Honors college. Advantages she has, NMSF, GA Governors honors finalist, most AP’s are 5’s, high SAT score, many academic awards to the list. They seems gone through applications very rigorously, if it’s just based on GPA and AP, atleast 3 other kids from her class must have been selected in to Honors.

I think you’ve miscalculated her UGA GPA. With three APs and A’s in all her classes it should be a good bit lower than that. She gets no extra points for dual enrollment. Her UGA GPA is probably more like a 4.18. That is just a guess based on an average courseload with all A’s at our high school.

Thanks. That’s somewhat helpful. She may have miscalculated the “UGA GPA.” We weren’t sure how many classes were considered “core.” Also, just shocked that College Dual Enrollment doesn’t count for anything with regards to rigor. I believe UGA Honors is really missing the mark here. Her high-school counts DE as 5.0 classes just like AP/IB. So, she has like a 4.65 as her HS WGPA. She’s top 3 in her class with a viable potential for Valedictorian. Also, she’s proven herself capable of AP success with AP Biology Student of the Year Award as a Freshman, AP Gov./Politics Student of the Year Award as a Sophomore, and AP Calculus Student of the Year Award (& a 5 on the AP Exam) as a Junior. Also, with a 1560 on the SAT that’s like the top 99.5 percentile in the country. She’s applying to 5 other schools and several premier scholarships. So, if another school takes a holistic look prior to UGA Honors full review and makes her a decent offer, she could easily choose another school. Unfortunately, this has left a bad impression, and it makes me sad for her and UGA. It is what it is though. So, if she’s not meant to be a dawg, I’ll just have to adjust.

yes

They do count towards rigor but they just don’t count it into the UGA GPA because college courses are not standardized, unlike AP and IB classes. That honestly makes sense to me. I know kids who have dual enrolled at UNG and at UGA for example and the UGA coursework is much more demanding.

A lot of top stats kids don’t get into UGA Honors as a direct admit. She can always fill out the application and apply. Also, look at the attributes of the honors program and see if that something that appeals to your daughter. My son knew he was not going to live in the honors dorm, and having to take a certain number of honors classes to maintain honors status was not super appealing. The biggest benefit was priority registration for him. I think it’s much more important to do well academically at UGA and employers are much more interested in your GPA than whether or not you’re in the honors program. The honors program is only slightly more than 10 percent of the class, so those who were auto admitted were likely well above the 75th percentile UGA GPA stats of 4.33 released in the UGA admissions blog. Many of those kids have both AP and dual enrollment as well.

Honors at UGA does come with many other additional perks, including recruitment from some elite recruiters that are only interested in honors students.

I have heard that no longer the case, now that UGA is one of the top universities in the country. I specifically asked that question during our tour of the business school. If you have a specific example, I would love to have that information.
