UGA Honors vs. Oxford College (Emory) Computer Science

Hello-

I am trying to decide between UGA Honors and Oxford College of Emory University. My intended major is computer science. I realize that Oxford (Emory) may not offer me enough variety of classes within this area.

What opinions are there between these two schools when it comes to a computer science major and/or even just the two schools in general?

Both are great and CS is hot enough right now that you can get a job from either.

Emory is obviously a wonderful college and starting at a LAC is attractive to many folks; they form a tight knit bond. But the downside as you note is the limited course selection in Oxford. For some advanced STEM classes you’ll have to bus to Buckhead.

UGA is a lot cheaper and has D1 sports if that is an interest.

Whether it’s worth $100k more over 4 years is a decision that your family has to make. If money is no object, Emory would be awesome. But if you have to take out a bunch of family loans, it ain’t worth it, IMO.

The Honors College at UGA is one of the better ones, and I think it’ll give you the LAC instruction. The CS classes will probably be a little bit better at UGA, but that slight advantage will disappear after 2 years of work. Also, a degree form Emory or UGA in CS won’t open doors through alumni or name recognition.

I think you already know this, but it’s really just about the extra $100k, whether your family can afford it, and whether you will enjoy Emory enough to justify it.

What about going to UGA and using the $100k for something else? Maybe grad school, programming boot camp, or a summer trip.

btw, if Emory involves loans I would recommend UGA.

I’d go for UGA Honors–especially if you want to enter a field that isn’t prestige-based. I don’t think paying that much more for Emory is worth it for CS.
