Hi all! My son has narrowed down his choices to university of Georgia and university of Florida. I would love to get your feedback on the options, and why he should choose one over the other. As of right now, he is a business major, but that could change. If he’s anything like his mom it may change a few times
Are you in state for any of these schools? What is your cost to attend?
No, we are in Tennessee. However, we used to live in Florida so we do have Florida prepaid. Although, UF would cost us less, because of scholarships UGA may not be much more. To be honest, money will not be a big factor in the decision process.
Visit. To me, the vibe or atmosphere at these two schools is different.
He visited Georgia a few weeks ago, and loved it. We have a trip to Florida scheduled for next week. The only problem is it’s at the tail end of UF’s spring break. Because of that, I don’t know if he’ll get a good taste of what campus life and night life is like there. My son is smart, and doesn’t have to work that hard, but really likes to have a good time. He wants to go to a good academic school, but also wants to enjoy all of what college has to offer socially,
I went to UF undergrad but now live in Georgia. My daughter almost ended up at UGA but decided on a smaller school. My nephew will likely be headed to UGA in the fall. You can’t go wrong with either. The vibe may be different but there are many similarities. I think the visit will help. I guess UF is slightly higher ranked and the business school may have a better reputation, but both are great academically. I would think Athens may have a little more to offer, especially with regard to the music scene. Obviously they both great sports schools. Hopefully the Gators will have a good football season next year with their new coach!
I went to grad school at UF in the days when UGA was, shall we say, not comparable academically. Have lived in GA ever since. Does your s want to spend a summer in Gainesville? While there are ways around it, the general expectation is that undergrads will complete one summer semester on campus. Does that matter?
You can’t lose! Both are great!
If you have Florida Pre Paid, tuition at UF will cost you nothing and you will not have any GPA pressure as far as trying to keep a certain GPA in order to maintain your scholarship.
Ooh, forgot your mentioned the prepaid. Use it!
Ooh, tough call but with Florida prepaid, that tips it to UF for me.
Gainesville is not for everyone. Our son loves it, but we are from Florida. Will be interested to hear how the visit goes. UF was the least impressive school visit we made. Our son has never regretted choosing UF though, and always says that he’s thankful he went that direction.
Business school is great too (our son in is in engineering).
The thing I notice about UF is that there really is something for everyone (unless you want mountains and snow). There are LOTS of smart, good kids here. Greek life is a typical SEC thing, but so are lots of other social/living situations. UF students know how to work hard and play hard.
Good luck with the decision!
