I'm from Georgia and have recently just been accepted to the University of Georgia under their "Early" Reg. Decision date. I also feel as if I have a solid chance at being accepted to Georgia Tech as well (which wont be released till mid-march). If I attended GT I will major in some sort of engineering, whereas at UGA it could be any major with a wealthy future. I want to stay in state because of the amazing deal the HOPE gives me as a Georgia resident. Now comes the hard part. I'm a very sociable person, and one could classify me as a part of the "popular" group at my high school. I know to focus on whats import such as my grades, but I love to have fun and do some occasional partying. I want to enjoy college and want a college experience that I will never forget. I love UGA and have practically fallen in love with it, but the post-college advantages of GT are making this decision ten times harder. Which is better? Is a GT degree really that much better than one from UGA? Also I have heard many firsthand accounts that GT is known to "suck the life out of you", is this true? If so, would you say that the success brought by GT over UGA really worth a horrible college career?

You do realize that there are parties at Georgia Tech right? While it’s not a “party school” like either UGA or Georgia Southern, most students haven’t made it their goal to finally dethrone Brigham Young’s spot as the driest school in America. If you want to major in engineering, you go to GTech. If you don’t and just want to take it relatively easy with a business administration major you should go to UGA since you prefer the school.

At GTech, you’ll have about 3 hours of class every day plus 6 hours of homework. If you don’t think you can handle it, you can go to UGA and major in something else. Engineering will be hard work everywhere, that’s why many students drop out or are weeded out. Regardless of where you go, you can’t party every day and hope to get good grades in rigorous classes. At UGA, the time you spend on homework is easier to “manage”, ie., to spend less time on class prep depending on the classes you take. At GTech you can’t - there won’t be more than one “easy” class per semester, if that. That’s why your degree will have a very high value - your future employers know you can perform under pressure and know every grade was earned through hard work, so hopefully you’ll bring these values to your workplace too.
But remember that once you’re done with these hours of work, the rest of the time is entirely yours. It’s not like high school where adults schedule things for you: You choose when to study (you’ll soon discover why a 9 am class is “early”), you choose what you spend your time on. You’ll have plenty of time to party on Friday night and Saturday all day; you’ll be involved in clubs and activities about 2 hours each day, plus socializing will take up a good 2-3 hours of your time as a freshman… So, even at Gtech, you won’t be going to class 8-3pm then homework till 10pm :p

Based only on what you’ve told us about yourself and what I know about these two schools, Georgia is the better choice for you. GT likely will make you unhappy, and you can get a good education at either one. Life’s too short to be unhappy these four years. I’m not a devotee of higher ed hedonism, so don’t get me wrong: I’m not encouraging you to party but to study hard and be happy.

First, I would say you should select your major carefully - it should be something you want to do and will enjoy doing for the rest of your life. I attended GT and majored in engineering because I enjoy math, physics, and problem-solving. Engineering is tough in general, and it will be hard to succeed if it’s not something you truly enjoy.

The good news for you is that you don’t have to decide between Engineering and UGA, as UGA is developing a complete college of engineering:

If majoring in engineering is a half hearted decision, then forget about Georgia Tech. The advantage of their degree is almost entirely based on being an engineering or science major. Don’t do it if you are not sure.

If you want options, then UGA is the better choice. Actually, just by asking the question makes it clear that UGA is the better choice for you. It is a very good school. Do not hesitate to go there. If GT was the school for you, then you would have no doubts.

My dad went to GT and I’ve been visiting GT for as long as I can remember and one of my good friends go there. Even though it is an “academic” school the parties are still supposed to be awesome, and if you’re into that then I would definitely join the Greek life there. GT also has more then just engineering, they also have a business school which is ranked higher then UGA’s is. My friend that goes to GT loves it, he really enjoys it and he says the partying there is good (I actually asked him specifically about that). I hope this helps you :)

Usually a better school is a school which will expect more from you. GT will make you work – period – regardless of major. Anybody who does not want to work, should not attend GT.
