Ugliest Campuses and Prettiest Campuses

brown is beautiful--it's shaped by courtyards and greens, a blend of architectures from colonial to georgian to gothic, buildings made out of traditional brick, brownstone, marble, accented by 200-year-old elm trees and stately statues

Does anyone else agree that UT Knoxville is pretty darn ugly?

I disagree. Maybe I'm biast because I'm going to be going to UT, but that is besides the point. I like that it's not flat, the rolling hills, and that it's right next to the river. It's gorgeous in the spring with all the green trees and tulips. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and they had white/orange mixed ones. They were too cute! Some of the buildings are rough looking, but that's why they are going crazy with all the construction. I can't wait until they get the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy done. :)

It's good to hear they are dedicating a building to Howard Baker. He deserves it.

I have to take issue with an earlier statement made on the board that Northeastern "does not have an attractive campus". This person obvioulsy has not seen Northeastern's campus lately? There has been so much construction that it’s almost unrecognizable to most people who have not stepped foot on campus in the last five years. In my opinion, Northeastern now has one of the most attractive urban campuses in the country. Photos:

Well lets see. First of all, i was just in Mass., and i thought NEU was pretty bad. It looked fake and out of place. Maybe im biased because i hated the school. BU was awesome. I loved the place.
UConn was gorgeous, but in the middle of nowhere.
Stanford and Virginia are also gorgeous.

i am at brandeis and i think it's fairly ugly. :(

another mention for Illinois Institute of Technology as a ****ty rustic terribly ugly small boxy rust belt era campus

i think harvard, indiana university, and Yale are the prettiest I have seen.

bentley is a good school but having one of the most beautiful campuses, NOT! its all new buildings and i wasn't too impressed by the lack of landscaping although in fairness i know they are still renovating.

IMO, Northeastern has much nicer campus than BU.
NEU's campus is mostly self contained and has a number of green areas. BU does not really have a defined campus. It is just a bunch of buildings intermingled with other city structures like NYU. In other words, it difficult to see where the campus begins and ends. This may be okay for some people but it's not for everyone.
Northeastern:
http://www.schooldesigns.com/ResultsDetail.asp?id=1787

All are beautiful. Bucknell holds their own - stately brick and spread out nicely.

Cornell, with the gorge and view of the lake is unique.

It is hard to pick a favorite, but Stanford is probably the best of the campuses I've seen. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it has been 70's, sunny, and perfectly clear both times I've visited.

Princeton is quaint and is situated in a small town.

Dartmouth - is the town. Very beautiful and northeast - in the woods with lots of recreation nearby.

Yale is great and, as far as architecture goes, some beautiful buildings (churches) near the campus

Maximus, i really just hated the school and felt it was out of place.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Pomona. The smog does kind of such there but that campus is beautiful.

USC, UCLA, LMU, USD are nice, but maybe I'm biased because socal is the best.

And obviously I think Georgetown is the nicest ever, but I go there so I might be biased, but I've visited tons of campuses and my opinion still stays strong.

I just visited UVa and, Jesus, it was like paradise...

indeed. i dont lie :)

have you guys seen the architechture at rice? It is so beautiful.

UVa is beautiful, although the traffic around it stinks (maybe it was just the time of day when i was there) Miami University, College of Wooster, and Kenyon are beautiful. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone say the University of Cincinnati was ugly...I find it hideous and it seems like it is closing in on you as you walk between buildings. Although, somepeople just love it and call it an architectural paradise...I beg to differ as an entering arch student at another school...it has VARIETY, certainly, but not beauty.

Reed in Oregon is enchantingly beautiful: Winsome gothic architecture and lovely grounds. Lots of flowering things, and lots of variety.
Cornell was surprisingly unattractive: Huge expanses of dead grass, at least last August. Looked like some terrible toxic accident.

I really love MIT, but I must say, the architecture is horrendous. Each building individually is not bad at all, but the combination is not easy on the eyes. Luckily, there are tunnels leading everywhere, so you never have to actually go outside to see them :) I just can't wait until the whole campus looks ultramodern like the Stata Center or Simmons Hall.

I saw UCLA from the Getty museum (those who live in socal or in west LA). It was stunningly beautiful.
