For architecture, landscaping, and layout Miami (OH) University's colonial style campus (founded in 1809) is up there IMO.

peachykeen, interesting that you mention Case Western. The campus was much more impressive than what I was expecting. Cleveland's University Circle reminds me of the Fenway loop in Boston (with Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard Medical School, Boston Conservatory, etc).

Prettiest: Purdue University, Arizona State University, University of Michigan

Alright: MIT, University of S. Florida, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, University of Central Florida

Not so pretty: Georgia Tech

Hideous: University of Arizona

I'm surprised no one has mentioned RIT as a hideous campus!

..oye

For the newcomers:

Beautiful: University of Chicago
Okay: Loyola University Chicago
Hideous: Illinois Institute of Technology

Penn State has a good looking campus.
I also like Case (though Its the opposite ofPSU :P)

Ohio Wesleyan campus is beautiful.
It has this old european town feel to it.

Pacific Lutheran University is the sphincter of the universe.

Poor Lutes!

We don't have many brick buildings in the Pacific NW, so Wake Forest was very impresssive to us.

WAcollegemom--Have you seen the Univ. of Puget Sound campus? Almost all of the buildings are brick, and some are ivy-covered. The architecture is "Tudor Gothic", and the campus is beautiful. There are lots of evergreen trees keeping it green year-round, instead of looking bare in the winter like some of the east coast and midwest schools. In May, when the rhododendrons bloom (fortuitously at graduation time), it is absolutely gorgeous. Another nice feature is that there are virtually no roads running through the main part of campus, so you don't have to cross any streets to get to classes, the student union building, etc.

Which campus is nicer, USC or U-Mich?

UVA..........UVa.....very very beautiful

UVa is the only American school that the United Nations deems an architectural treasure along with the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, and the Egyptian Pyramids.

Even architecturally, UVa was different from other campuses in that Jefferson wanted to create "an academical village" where students and professors would live and learn together. Based on Jefferson's collegiate ideas and designs, many other schools copied UVa (from Duke to MIT).

i hear that UVA is beautiful, but out of the places i've seen, i really loved emory: the quad was great, the buildings were all of the this really nice white stone, plus very very few cars on campus (no unsightly parking decks)

ucla is beautiful

Gorgeous: Stanford, Yale, Duke, Princeton, Rice (In that order)
Pretty: Harvard, CMU, I guess Penn State too (I'm surprised so many people think it's among the prettiest; I think I'm biased because I live here)
Ugly: Texas A&M, MIT

But you know what? haha I picked MIT over 4 of what I thought were the prettiest... and proud of it :)
I was obsessed with the prettiest ones before I applied... but after you are accepted places and go for a visit and actually try to picture yourself there and figure out how much you "fit," you realize you'll get used to the beauty (or lack thereof) of the campus, and it's not as exciting as you thought. Just a thought.

I <3 MIT :-D

I'm pretty sure stevens doesn't have an ugly campus. The buildings may not all match but only certain kinds of people have a problem with that.

Let me begin this by stating that I go to UCLA.

I think that in California, UCLA, Stanford, USC, and Berkeley are the most beautiful. Pepperdine has a nice location but it's not that great for a college. UCLA's campus is one of the reasons I came here... it was the only one in California where I actually felt connected to the school, and though there are some ugly buildings (cough South Campus cough, even though one of my majors is south campus :P), the multitude of pretty buildings far outweighs the negatives. Stanford is amazing, but I feel like it just looks like a giant mission. The campus is beautifully maintained, though. Berkeley has really nice parts to it, and to tell you the truth I submitted an SIR there and withdrew it later because I couldn't decide between UCLA, Berkeley, and Stanford. The problem with Berkeley is that it just feels scattered--the buildings don't really mesh together, the dorms are in weird locations... etc. But the trees and greenery are amazing, as are the bay views. I just went to USC the first time a week ago and I think that the campus is pretty nice... lots of flowers (as sick as that makes me feel to admit)... but I mean it's in West Adams, yuck... (sorry, had to bash it a little :P). A bit cramped, though.

As for the East Coast: I think that Cornell is the most beautiful of those that I visited in that it combines beauty in both architectural and setting. Columbia was fairly impressive as well. Thirdly, I think that I agree that there was something about Penn State that impressed me... very pretty and the atmosphere was amazing. Harvard was... Harvard. Pretty boring and impersonal. I could almost smell the grade inflation walking around. Yale... well, we didn't make it to the actual campus because we were so disgusted by New Haven... we were behind a guy who was barfing out his car window as he was driving so maybe that's why. UPenn was nice campus-wise but the location was not-so-nice.

I saw Stanford myself, well, not actually in person, but on a DVD. It was beautiful, in my opinion. I'm from nyc and love most places in cali because of the more laid back atmosphere and warm sunshiney weather. My parents wouldn't let me visit Stanford b/c of the price of a flight (we can't really afford it right now). Has anyone visited Stanford? For those like myself who can't physically get there, i strongly recommend the dvds. They're pretty affordable and hosted by stars from the WB. I found out about them from a school counselor actually, and ordered them at www.theU.com. I also want to visit pepperdine but i don't think that there is a dvd for that. maybe there is.
