UGS Freshman Seminar Advice

I wanted to give the incoming freshmen a heads-up about the UGS freshman seminar class. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's been kind of a nightmare for my son. He had a pretty full schedule, so finding ANY UGS class that would fit was difficult, then most of them were full. He kept checking back on a regular basis, but not too much opened up. He signed up for a Global Money class first semester that was so tough he dropped it. Second semester he got into a very esoteric class that is also really rough. This is a kid who was an excellent student in high school and made the honor roll in engineering first semester (after dropping that class, lol).

So I guess my point is to be very careful about the UGS class you sign up for. I'm not sure what he could have done differently, but whatever he did was not right!

ML is right! Most students think the UGS freshman seminar classes will be a blow off class. This couldn’t be farther from the truth…D is taking one this semester that has a writing flag, which she needed for her major, and it has been nothing short of a challenge. Be careful when selecting your UGS because it could be very challenging and they are very hard to get into. The one that D is in is absolutley not one that she would choose on her own…she had no other choices…

UGS classes seem to be a real hit or miss. I took “Journalism in/and Democracy” with Bob Jensen, and it was probably the easiest class I’ve ever taken. It was still interesting, though.
