One D is not going to drop you down .2 GPA.
But it will probably take you out of the running for HYPS if it remains on your transcript.

^
Woah, are you serious? Like, even with the re-take grade? Uh oh…

BuddyMcAwesome

You’re annoying. Grow up. And that’s coming from me.

^ As I said, IF it remains on your transcript. Remember, you are competing with perfect 4.0 UW, nearly 5.0 W, perfect test scores, etc. People who have never gotten an A- let alone a D.

^
What do you mean by “remain on my transcript?” The way it works if that no credits are shown, and it will have no impact on my school GPA. It basically will show that I originally got a D and then re-took it and got an A. Is that still bad?

Also, my school only let us take three weighted classes in freshman year, so I only had a 4.42. I only have a 4.67 this year because I took Academic Decathlon and got a B in AP Chemistry. In the next two years, I’ll have 5.0s, hopefully.

Is weighted GPA that important, is anything above a 4.65 sufficient?

Look, HYPS is a crapshoot already. The reason I am saying that it is basically out of the running for you is because it’s there. Period. Even if it’s not factor into the GPA doesn’t matter. A 4.65 is good, but don’t count on getting straight As either. I do hope you’ll get in, but I’m just saying it makes it 1000x harder with a D on your transcript, even if you retook.

^
Does the same apply for a C?

^ Pretty much.

Wait Saugus. So if you retake your D, it’ll still show up on your transcript?

''Hi (blank),
I just asked the Registrar about the repeated course. She said the grade will show,
however, the credits attempted are removed and not calculated in your GPA.
Colleges do recalculate your transcript using their own formula. You will need to go to
the schools website to confirm how they count grades. Each school is different.
I hope this helps."

Yeah, it’ll still show up… ):

She followed up with this one:

“They will look at the re-take grade. It will not factor in on your being accepted.”

But I doubt that is true.

Why do you want so badly to go to HYPS? If all your other grades are As and one D, then apply to other colleges and I assure you you’ll get in.

It’s probably a dealbreaker for the top colleges. Why did you get a D? If there are people in your classes getting A’s, there is no reason to not get a B. The caliber of the top schools is determined by people who were close to the top of their class. If you can’t manage a B when people are getting A’s, that says something about your ability to go to a top school. That’s how it is…

Without meaning to sound rude, what’s your obsession with HYPSM? There are plenty of other high quality universities in the world, and they come without the hyperobsessed social elitists. You don’t have to go to one of those five schools to get a good education, a good job, or have a good life. Stop stressing over them. I’m sure you’ll get into plenty of good schools.

^
I’m looking at NorthWestern, Duke, Columbia, UPenn, etc.

But I’d imagine their policy is very much the same.

I guess I’ll have to aim for UC Berkley now…

Berkley is arguably the top public school in America, and you make it sound like going there is “settling” for 2nd best. It is an awesome school that people clamor to get into all the time, don’t make it sound like school X down the block.

First, don’t treat Berkeley like its some community college that you could have gotten into without trying, getting into this school will be close to as hard to get into as some of your previously listed schools, and with that attitude I doubt you will.

What makes you think you’re so elite that you’re too good for Berkeley?

what major do you want again? Because for many Berkeley has as good or better programs than HYP

^ You won’t get into Berkeley with that attitude and a D. And Berkeley is a very good school. Feel proud if you get in ;)

Berkeley is really good and I’d save a lot of money since I live in California. I’m just saying… It is a step down. ):
