You're right, when a cop tells you to do somethign and you don't move fast enough, you deserve to be tasered! Good reasoning...

seriously...

uhh cops have a duty to uphold the safety of other students. if that guy in the back wasn't a student, but an insane kid with a gun, who would be responsible for the injuries that would result? they're just doing their job. respect them and listen to them.

yeahh and already kids on facebook make a group blaiming the cops for everyhtihng... always blame the cops...

I definitely agree with your point sicks06 but, at the same time, it seemed like he was already cooperating and leaving up until the officer physically grabbed him to escort him out. When he started resisting, maybe the officers were right in tasering him so that the situation wouldn't escalate. But then why would they taser him multiple times again when he was on the ground already? for not getting up quick enough? for further resistance (it seemed like the guy was just struggling with pain)?

Basically, the guy was acting like a jerk in the beginning but he eventually cooperated and didn't deserve to be tasered more than once. Of course, I could be totally wrong since the reported details aren't super accurate, but my suitemate was a firsthand witness and said that the so-called "resistance" wasn't something that warranted tasering.

All in all, I still believe that UCPD officers are fair and committed to protecting us; this just might be a possible isolated case of mismanagement.

"Since, after repeated requests, he would neither leave nor show identification, the CSO notified UCPD officers, who responded and asked Tabatabainejad to leave the premises multiple times. He continued to refuse. As the officers attempted to escort him out, he went limp and continued to refuse to cooperate with officers or leave the building.

Greenstein said Tabatabainejad encouraged others in the library to join his "resistance."

Oh boy, another bandwagon revolutionary...
I bet he was wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt at the time of the incident.

If, if, if...

Fact of the matter is, he wasn't posing any sort of real threat at the time. Granted, he might not be the brightest guy in the world, and may have been acting like a jerk, but you can't be arrested for being an idiot. Being a cop is a very tough job, and I understand they make mistakes, but they must be held up to such a high standard because they do have so much power. No one's denying that this guy was probably an idiot. However, cops can't just go around tasering everyone who disagrees with them. Every citizen in this country has rights, idiot or not.

Well said, McGizzle. How was the game?

Game was good, we struggled for a good part of the game but turned it on when we needed to. Luc and Darren are awesome. Darren is gonna take us far as long as he's playing. Jordan Farmar sat behind me for a while in the first half... Jesus he has the biggest watch I've ever seen in person.

Of course, the highlight of the game for me was when two of the hot dance team girls (they didn't perform this game) decided to next to me and my friend for a while in the first half. I saw them coming up the stairs and thought "please please sit next to me."

Hope throwing around was good for you bfried2.

I'd like to add to my previous post though, on the real, if you've lived in this country for a while, and you look down and the color of your skin is not white, you know that it's not in your best interest to mess with the cops. Everyone's seen Cops and the police specials and we've all seen that it never ends well. Especially if you live in LA, you should definitely know that the cops do screw up, and it's probably in your best interest of self preservation to assume that they will be bad. So, if I was in his situation, I woulda done what I always done with dealing with the cops, which is shut up and/or run away. That does not make the cops right still, in fact I still think they were very wrong. I'm just saying, it's probably in your best interest to assume they will be wrong.

[/quote]

Because he still refused to get up and walk himself out of there.

Yep...

For resisting a peace officer and failing to comply with legal requests (see section 148 of the Penal Code)

but you can't be arrested for being an idiot.

Um... if said idiocy violates the above Penal Code (or any other for that matter) you can :)

From what the video shows there may have been excessive force. There is also resistance on Mostafa's part: perhaps not physical, but certainly verbal.

By the time UCPD approached him, he must have known that no individuals are allowed at Powell after 11 p.m. without their BruinCard. I do not know why it took him this long to leave Powell, assuming the CSO's radioed UCPD, it would probably be 5 (or less) minutes for them to get to Powell.

He already refused to abide by the CSO's demands (assuming he was asked to leave the library). We've witnessed the climax here, guys, but over half of the story we really do not know.

This is not to justify the punishment, it is to point out the actions that lead to this.

I would like to hear the CSO's side. What compelled them to call UCPD? Did they even aks Mostafa to leave? Did he refuse?

I would love to jump to a conclusion here, but there's really too little information available to make a sound judgement.

yea cops have extremely stressful jobs when it comes time for them to perform. who knows, that kid may have had a gun or may have given a hint of striking the officer. Im not supporting the tazering multiple times thing, but if it was for my safety, i wouldn't mind a cop using his tools.
Seriously, everytime some idiot catches this kinda thing on camera, it turns into this HUGE issue of bad cop. There've been things on the news lately like this too. THEY ARE POLICE OFFICERS. If you resist, then they need to subdue to maintain order.

I'm sure that they have a policy to ask the person to leave a few times if they don't present a bruincard and then, if they still refuse, to call the police out to escort them out. I don't think that CSO's are allowed to physically force someone out of a building, so I'm sure that they have to call the police if that becomes necessary.

the whole thing seems fishy to me....all that over a stupid bruincard? ***

CSOs don't have a ton of authority, they are almost always required to call the cops in a situation that goes beyond writing someone up.

DUDE WAS IN HANDCUFFS!!!!!. what could he have really done? all they had to do was drag him out and throw him in jail. im sure all those cops are strong enough to carry this man out. just another example of dumb cops who can't handle a situation. they think it is necessary to use excessive force. i hope they get fired. i hope this guys sues them and wins.

all you kids saying he got what he deserved aren't being fair. its not like he commited a major offense - all he did was lag a little and homie got tasered 5 times. if i was that guy i'd get jesse jackson (though i hate this guy) and sue their asses.

at least the idiot knows not to be an idiot now.

even if he sues, i don't think it'll go anywhere...

Never in my life...the same thing happened at my high school, but we all fought back. We didn't stand around and let it happen, and a bunch of kids went to jail for it.
